    RENAULT FLUENCE – Overview

After many years of hatchbacks and the Koleos SUV, TC Euro Cars (TCEC) in 2014 offered a French-Korean flavoured C-segment sedan with the Fluence 2.0. The Renault Fluence was introduced as a locally-assembled vehicle right from the start of the project and assembled by Tan Chong Motor Assemblies in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur.

It is a popular product in South Korea, where it is marketed under the Renault Samsung Motor brand. Being a C-segment sedan, its traditional competitors are Toyota Corolla Altis, Honda Civic, Mazda 3, Nissan Sylphy, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Cerato, Volkswagen Jetta, Peugeot 408 sedan and Ford Focus sedan.

The last official price of the Renault Fluence 2.0 was RM113,143 in 2018 thanks to the zero-rated GST or tax-free holiday. However, TCEC was offering additional incentives that reduced the price of the fully-featured sedan for just under RM80,000. Sales of the vehicle has been discontinued in 2019.

  • Exterior

    RENAULT FLUENCE– Exterior

The Renault Fluence shares many of its underpinnings with the Renault Megane hatchback. However, as sedans are not popular in Western Europe and France, the styling was catered towards Renault Samsung Motors and eastern European markets.

This means it looks rounded and not particularly striking, unlike the Honda Civic or Mazda 3. Standard features include automatic on-off projector headlights, LED DRLs and Renault Smart Key Card Entry system. In the 2015 facelift, the tail lamps were revised together with a new front bumper that features LED DRLs and an updated grille design. These were only offered in the more expensive Dynamique variant.

Similar to most of the rivals, 17-inch wheels are fitted to the Renault Fluence. At the end of its model life, TCEC introduced a sportier variant called Black Edition as well as Trophy Edition that featured an all-round bodykit and darkened rims.

  • Interior

    RENAULT FLUENCE– Interior

    Dashboard

The dashboard is a straightforward design in a T-shape, with the switches clearly sectioned and clustered. It was one of the first sedans to fit a standing infotainment screen at the top of the dashboard, which has now become the norm.
There are also touches to make the interior a bit more premium, upmarket, via brushed silver accent on the steering wheel, dashboard, centre console, door handles plus the gear lever area. In the sportier Black and Trophy editions, the accents were replaced with items in piano gloss black finish.

The glovebox is easy to reach and even has a full-length pocket on the door, useful to store a notepad, some random loyalty cards as well as stowage for charging cables. It’s not a wide glovebox due to the layout of the fusebox and other electrical panels, which is common in Renault vehicles. A narrow slot next to the Start-Stop button is used to store the Renault Smart Key Card if you find it too large in your shirt pocket.

    Instrument cluster

The Renault Fluence gets a circular digital speedometer in an LCD-segment format (like the digital calculator and clock display). The font size is large and additional driving and fuel consumption information is helped by a dot matrix screen at the side. A traditional analogue tachometer is placed to the right of the circular speedometer display.

    Space and practicality

The cabin of the Renault Fluence is within the expectation of global C-segment sedans. There is adequate legroom and shoulder room for front and rear passengers. Rear passengers also get an armrest and rear air-conditioning vent. However, the rear doors do not have bottle holders. Storage space for the front is also limited to the armrest console box and two individual cup holders, one ahead and one behind the shift lever.

  • Features

    RENAULT FLUENCE– Features

    Safety features

There are six airbags in the Renault Fluence, with the consumer-expected passive safety system such as electric stability control, hill start assist, and traction control. The rearview camera also projects in the 7-inch infotainment display.
For those who are curious, the Renault Fluence uses a full-sized spare tyre.

    Comfort features

Standard features in the Renault Fluence include automatic dual-zone air-conditioning, automatic rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, automatic ‘walk-away’ door locking as well as the slim Renault Smart Key Card access with start-stop button.

The seats are upholstered in a combination leather material while the steering wheel and gear knob are matched with leather wrapping. The rear seat also has a 60-40 split folding layout. Being a generation old, certain nice-to-have features are missing such as a power-adjustable driver’s seat, electronic parking brake and LED headlamps are not available in the Renault Fluence.

    Infotainment

The Renault Fluence is factory-fitted with an R-Link 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It features a navigation map that can be updated via an SD card. Although full coloured, the smartphone connectivity of the audio system is limited to just Bluetooth streaming audio.

The sound is meanwhile pumped out to a six-speaker setup with sound processing done by Arkamys software. Adjusting the audio from the steering wheel switch is rather different in a Renault, where the switch fob is hidden behind the spoke of the steering wheel. The steering wheel buttons on the 9 and 3 o’clock spokes are for adjusting the cruise control, where the main on/off switch is located on the lower console, next to the handle lever at a slanted angle.

  • Powertrain

    RENAULT FLUENCE – Powertrain

    Engine

The Renault Fluence in Malaysia is equipped with a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with outputs of 143 PS and 195 Nm of torque. The peak torque arrives at 3,750 rpm, providing a punchy feeling when driving around town. The engine and transmission share key components with the Nissan Sylphy 2.0L; both companies being in an alliance since 1999.

    Transmission

Power goes to the front wheels via an Xtronic CVT. There is a manual mode for sportier drives on the shift lever to manually select up to six of the required gear step/range.

    Chassis

The front suspension features MacPherson Strut design with the rear featuring torsion beam axle. Two-tone alloy wheels are fitted to the Renault Fluence Dynamique variant, with tyres in 205/55R17 sizing.

    Drivetrain

The Renault Fluence is a front-wheel drive sedan.

  • Driving Performance

    RENAULT FLUENCE – Driving Performance

    Engine performance

The sprint from standstill to 100 km/h is 10.1 seconds onward to a top speed of 195 km/h. Similar to the Nissan Sylphy, the powertrain feels very well calibrated for a relaxed and unhurried driving experience. Plenty of torque and response can be felt without pushing the engine hard.

    Transmission performance

The Xtronic CVT is smooth and intuitive, with some step shifting with the engine rpm raise corresponding to the road speed. Given the refinement from Nissan, Renault’s alliance partner, the powertrain makes driving very relaxed and feels like a smooth operator.

    Steering and handling

While it is not a European product like the Ford and Peugeot, the Renault Fluence handles the bends and corners with solid confidence. The Renault DNA is certainly in the Fluence, where there is a certain level of composure when tackling the bends. Even with torsion beam rear axle, the Renault Fluence handles well and has precise body control. We definitely give high marks for the Renault Fluence in the handling evaluation.

  • Ride Comfort

    RENAULT FLUENCE – Ride Comfort

    Soundproofing

Sound insulation is better than average in the Renault Fluence, with the CVT lowering engine rpm and without whine. Tyre noise is also minimal.

    Passenger comfort

Ride quality feels a bit harsher than its Japanese competitors. Nonetheless, it handles very well and rides over potholes and rough patches of road without alerting the occupants.

  • Fuel Consumption

    RENAULT FLUENCE – Fuel Economy

The Renault Fluence is rated at 7.7 litres per 100 km (13 km/L).

  • Conclusion

    RENAULT FLUENCE – Conclusion

The Renault Fluence is a fine sedan for those who are particular looking for something that offers great value.
Looking at the specifications list, it is also missing out is many new features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking, smartphone connectivity for the infotainment system as well as a plushier interior. One should remember the product was originally launched in 2014.

On paper, the powertrain doesn’t look sufficient but thanks to great calibration of the CVT and torque output, the drive feels responsive and at the same time, relaxed. TCEC offers different ownership experiences with Renault products such as subscription package. It is a great way to feel the products without the large commitment.
