In a bid to accelerate its electrification efforts and catch up with rivals, Mazda is set to launch its first dedicated electric vehicle (EV) model in 2027, according to CEO Masahiro Moro.

Although many may recall the battery electric vehicle (BEV) version of the Mazda MX-30, it’s also available as a hybrid, leaving the Hiroshima-based carmaker without an EV-only model.

Following the launch of the dedicated EV model, Mazda will be looking to boost production of EV-only models from 2028 onwards. This will also include the development of high-quality electric control equipment in collaboration with its capital alliance partner, Toyota.

Furthermore, Moro also vowed to accelerate electrification efforts in China, the world’s largest auto market, hedging his bets on a rapid shift towards EVs in the country.

“We will offer one (EV) model after another from 2025 through a Chinese joint venture,” explained Moro, though that could indicate BEV variants of existing models, like the MX-30.

Over in the West, Mazda has started production of the CX-50 SUV at its factory in Alabama and will be aiming to produce a hybrid variant of it as well.

Taking into account the Inflation Reduction Act penned by U.S. President Joe Biden that offers a tax break for customers that purchase EVs assembled in North America, Mazda will be looking to make use of that and consider production (of EVs) and battery procurement in the region.

To further build on the marque’s brand value, Moro added that he will consider setting up a new company that focuses on organising motorsports events, high-performance driver training and promote safe driving.

Moro stepped up to the CEO’s plate in June 2023, taking the place of Akira Marumoto, who held the top position for the past 5 years.
