MBSJ to install speed breakers along Jalan Kemajuan Subang

The Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MBSJ) is finally addressing the growing number of car accidents along Jalan Kemajuan Subang. The council will be installing more signage to warn motorists to slow down and even speed breakers to prevent cars from going too fast.

There are three accident prone areas along the same stretch. The first area is the junction leading cars into Subang Jaya from the Federal Highway.

The second being the tight hairpin turn right next to the Apartment One Soho Subang. The third is the junction before the exit to Federal Highway heading towards Klang.

There are many factors leading to the high number of accidents in the area, for one the hairpin stretch is well known as the “Subang Daytona”.

Long ago when the hairpin was first opened to road users, street racers used to hold illegal races along that stretch.

While the races have since been disbanded, the memory of the activity remains fresh in many car enthusiast’s mind and impromptu tests are still held from time to time just to push their cars to the limit.

It also doesn’t help that the exit signage directing road users out of the hairpin is a confusing affair. Many drivers will realise their mistake at the last second and would attempt to swerve out of the lane to either enter or avoid the exit.

Meanwhile, the accidents along the entrance and exit from Federal Highway are mostly caused by the drivers underestimating the sharp turn.

According to MBSJ reps, many cars are found driving over the 50 km/h speed limit causing the cars taking the tight turn to skid even during dry conditions.

Addressing the issue, MBSJ Corporate and Strategic Management deputy director Azfairizal Abdul Rashid said that the council is well aware of the accident prone areas.

Previously, the council had installed road markings and traffic signage to warn road users to beware when driving on the stretch.

As their efforts are not reducing the number of accidents around the area, the council have decided take more drastic measures to force motorists to adhere to the speed limit by installing yellow transverse bars (speed breakers) and more traffic signage.

Let’s hope that the speed breakers will significantly reduce the number of accidents there while discouraging aspiring street racers from attempting to create impromptu street racing along the stretch.
