Wait, the Perodua Bezza is the world's best-selling entry-level sedan in 2022?

The humble Perodua Bezza is a successful little sedan that moved many Malaysians ever since it was first introduced in 2016 as P2’s first-ever three-box-shaped car. A favourite among Grab drivers, young families, and first-time car owners, the Bezza is as much of an icon as any other Perodua.
But in 2022, it achieved yet another milestone not on a national scale, but a global one. That’s right, if you’ve gotten passed the clickbait-sounding title and curiosity got you this far, the Perodua Bezza is ranked as the best-selling entry-level sedan in 2022 albeit unofficially.
Felipe Munoz, a global automotive analyst for JATO Dynamics runs the @carindustryanalysis Instagram page and he has compiled the results of the best-selling models from all over the world. Recently, he published a post that shows the best-selling A-/B-segment sedans in the world in 2022.
In the entry-level category, the Perodua Bezza is ranked number one with 66,600 units sold in 2022 which is a 55% increase from the previous year. In 2021, the Bezza was ranked sixth in this segment globally.
Meanwhile, the 2021 champ, the Renault Logan dropped to 7th with 49,000 units sold in 2022. That might not sound like good news but then again, the entry-level/B-segment sedan market saw a 7% drop in sales overall in 2022 with 2.42 million sold across the three aforementioned categories.
Also ranked in the top 5 global best-selling entry-level sedans is another familiar Malaysian name. With 51,600 units sold in 2022, the Proton Saga was placed fifth according to Munoz’s data. It also went up the ranks as it was placed 8th in 2021.
Also in the same post, the Toyota Vios ranks as the best-selling B-segment sedan overall with 278,600 units sold globally in 2022. The Proton Persona is ranked 14th in the same category with 20,100 units.
The sedans in the entry-level sedan category mainly comprise of models from developing markets sold in Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. Slotting between our two Malaysians in the top 5 of 2022 are the Lada Granta, the Chevrolet Aveo/Sail, and the Kia Soluto/Pegas.
