In addition to the major mechanical teething issues and “buyer beware” concerns that Rod Croskery mentioned, Cayenne values are affected by its VW roots, the big visual change between the first- and later-generation models, the large number of model and powertrain configurations, and the huge sales numbers compared to the classic, more sporting Porsches. The “entry level” first-generation (2003–2010) and second-generation (2011–2017) Cayennes were powered by VW-engineered VR6 engines rather than some born and bred Porsche creation. The range of engines over the years has been very broad, ranging from a 237 HP diesel through a 671 HP twin-turbo V8 with electric motor assist. Cayennes have had VR6, gas V6, turbo gas V6, twin turbo gas V6, supercharged gas V6, supercharged gas V6 hybrid, turbo diesel V6, normally aspirated V8, twin-turbo V8, and twin turbo V8 hybrid powertrains. It is a bewildering number of choices leading to buyer confusion when it’s time to shop or accurately value a given vehicle. Until the Porsche Macan came along, the Cayenne was by far the company’s best selling model, so there is a relative glut of Cayennes out there. In addition to being a complex SUV with lots of features and systems that can be difficult and expensive to keep in perfect order, many were bespoke vehicles. They were custom-ordered and personalized with extraordinarily high-priced optional details like painted wheel crests and special color leather stitching. It’s very hard to preserve that initial investment in the used market. The Cayenne was Porsche’s very profitable, capable, and fashionable answer to, “What can we sell to our traditional sportscar buyers now that everyone wants an SUV?” The first-generation Cayenne now looks very dated compared to the Gen 2 and Gen 3 (2018-present) models, so that’s another big reason for a hit on used vehicle pricing.
