Do larger wheels and lower profile tyres give better performance? 01

A common practice for manufacturers when it comes to differentiating their model trim or specification level is to have different wheel sizes. Higher rung models often have larger wheels thus having lower profile tyre, and the general consensus is that larger wheels look better. But are there actual benefits of having larger wheels?

First, let’s take a brief through what exactly is the profile of a tyre. It refers to the gap or distance between the edge of the rim and edge of the tyre, it is referred to as tyre sidewall. You can find out what is the tyre profile on your car by observing the tyre specifications.

The general rule when upsizing your wheels is to maintain the overall diameter of the tyre. If you’re fitting a larger wheel, the profile of the tyre needs to be lower to achieve similar diameter. Reasons for this is to minimize the impact on fuel consumption, gear ratios, speedometer, etc.

When it comes to performance cars, larger wheels mean there is more room for larger brakes. Thinner sidewall also means there is less deformation during hard cornering, which improves steering feel and grip as it provides a more consistent contact patch to the road, tyre width being equal.

On the flipside, having a lower profile tyre leads to a stiffer and rougher ride, since there is less “cushion” from the road to the wheels. And the less “cushion” also makes it easier to damage the wheels when going through potholes for example. Also, larger wheels are generally heavier and that affects acceleration and fuel consumption.

Smaller wheels with higher profile tyres on the other hand, are the reverse. So it’s more comfortable, less likely to be bent, and improves fuel consumption. But steering feel is vaguer because there is slightly more delay between the wheel turning and the contact patch reacting. What’s happening is that the sidewall flexes more while the tyre footprint remains the same.

Lastly, there is the matter of price. Everything else being equal, such as tyre brand and width, lower profile tyres are usually more expensive. Take the Proton X70 for example, its tyre size starts from 225/65 R17 for the Standard variant, 225/60 R18 for the Executive variant, and 225/55 R19 for the Premium variants. The only difference is the tyre profile that reduces as the wheel size increases.

Looking at the listed prices online for Continental UC6 tyres, the 225/65 R17 tyre is priced in the range of RM 380 to RM 460, the 225/60 R18 ranges between RM 480 to RM 540, and the 225/55 R19 tyre is in the range of RM 580 to RM 670.

Like many other things, it comes down to your needs and preferences. If your car has large brakes or if you want better steering feel, then a lower profile tyre will play along to your needs. However, if you prioritise comfort and lower cost of maintenance, then smaller wheels and a higher profile tyre will suit your preferences.

On that note, remember to frequently check your car tyre pressure often as well.
