Isuzu Motors has a high market share in Thailand with its D-Max pick-up giving even the legendary Toyota Hilux a run for its money but with Chinese carmakers taking the lead in electric vehicles (EV) over there, Isuzu is looking to not lose market share by launching an electric pick-up there as soon as 2025, according to a report by Asian Nikkei.
Currently, pick-ups account for about half of Isuzu’s global sales and the electric pick-up should help to maintain those numbers or even expand them a little.

On the other hand, EV sales in Thailand account for about 8 percent of new cars, with the majority of those EVs from the aforementioned Chinese carmakers.
In 2022, Isuzu disclosed in their Mid-Term Business Plan 2024 Progress Report that studies into electrified pick-ups are well underway, meaning that battery electric vehicles (BEV) as well as hybrids (HEV) are being considered.
However, since then it appears that the BEV pick-up will come to market first. It’ll be based on the popular D-Max and be launched in Thailand with the hopes of shoring up its market share in the pick-up segment, currently standing around the 50 percent mark.

While the D-Max based electric pick-up wouldn’t be the first in its segment, it could very well prove to be the best-selling BEV pick-up once it does come on sale given the popularity of the D-Max in Thailand.
That, coupled with Thai government subsidies for locally-produced EVs, would make a launch in the Kingdom a given. Furthermore, the diesel D-Max is already assembled in Thailand.

Following the launch of its electric pick-up, Isuzu will be looking into BEV variants of their existing Light Duty, Medium Duty and Heavy Duty trucks.
The first among that trio will be BEV versions of the Light Duty trucks as Isuzu aims to have them offered in the 2030s.
