Fans of BMW sports cars might need some emotional therapy after this as the Bavarian motor company might axe two of its flagship sports car models – the BMW Z4 and the BMW 8 Series. Just like its peers, BMW is focusing on electrified models but its strategy will see EVs sold alongside ICE-powered counterparts.

This is according to a report by Car and Driver as sources told the American publication that there are no plans for a successor to the Z4 and the 8 Series coupe and convertible.

However, sources told C&D that the 4-door 8 Series Gran Coupe could see a new all-electric generation that will fight against the Porsche Taycan.

C&D also reported that BMW Group plans to kill off the Rolls-Royce Ghost. In its place, the German plans to position Alpina as a direct competitor with Mercedes-Maybach while Rolls-Royce will only offer exclusive models to fit the ultra-luxury clientele.

With the Z4 rumoured to be nearing its end, what about its Japanese twin? The Toyota GR Supra is more well-received than the Z4 in terms of sales figures but its successor might no longer be too reliant on having BMW as its partner.

Both models are also built by Magna Steyr at its Austrian plant so the Supra could soldier on even if BMW discontinued the Z4.

Japanese publications have speculated that the Supra’s replacement could be a rear-wheel-driven EV with a pseudo manual transmission. Toyota is also rumoured to be developing what might be the final hurrah to its ICE-powered sports cars in the form of a mid-engine supercar that draws inspiration from the second-gen MR2.
