Sometimes 2+2=4 but in the case of Toyota’s chairman Akio Toyoda ripping some donuts in a Subaru WRX STI rally car, it’s more like 1+1=3. No, we didn’t forget how to use our abacus as Best Car Web shared this interesting story.
You see, Toyota and Subaru got into bed a long time ago and the love child from that rendezvous was the Toyobaru twins, the Toyota GT86 and the Subaru BRZ. Since then, their relationship has only deepened with the new generation of the GR86 and the new BRZ twin as well as the all-electric Toyota bZ4X and the Subaru Solterra.
According to Toyoda, the two automotive companies working together allows them to create something more than if they went at it alone, or in his own words, “the concept of 1+1=3.”
Therefore, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see Toyoda, or to call him by his motorsport alter ego, Mr. Morizo, behind the wheel of a Subaru rally machine.

Rally Japan 2023, the final round of the World Rally Championship (WRC), will be held from 16 to 19 November 2023. A talk show and demo run to promote it was held on the final day of the Japan Mobility Show.
The talk show featured the top rally drivers from both carmakers and their factory rally teams. That saw the likes of Toshihiro Arai from Subaru Team Arai, Norihiko Katsuta of Toyota Gazoo Racing WRJ, Takamoto Katsuta from Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT and Adrian Fourmaux of M-Sport Ford WRT. Naturally, Mr. Morizo was there as well.

After the talk show, a demo run was held on a special outdoor venue. The first car to shred some rubber was the WRX STI. After some impressive moves, the driver got out and it was Mr. Morizo himself instead of Arai.
Having experience in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla, Mr. Morizo was a natural at taming the rally machine.
Next, Norihiko drove the GR Yaris that Morizo usually uses for rally practice and Arai got back behind the wheel of the Subaru WRX STI.
Following that run, the tyres were replaced on the GR Yaris and Mr. Morizo himself took it out for a spin. At the end, all three machines entered the course at the same time and performed some donuts for the crowd. Finally, Mr. Morizo donned a Subaru STI jacket for the photo opportunity.
