Does Toyota use direct injection engines?
Yes, Toyota do use direct injection system but with a twist. Direct fuel injection is better at cooling the combustion chamber, worked better at cold starts and controlling fuel trims under certain conditions. But, under certain engine speed and load conditions, direct injection can produce soot due to a lack of vaporization. That is the reason why we see late models cars that have the stainless tailpipe tips blackened. In EU countries direction injection engines were modified to meet the latest particulate emission. US have not change our laws to reflect that yet. Furthermore, under some circumstances, port fuel injection will provide more torque. Toyota vehicles have both direct fuel injection and port fuel injection starting in 2007 on Lexus model, in 2012 to 2015 they were offered as an option. Now you will find it in 4 cylinder Camrys and Subaru from a joint production agreement. Toyota calls this system the D-4S or Dynamic Force Engine. The direct fuel injectors are just like any other direct fuel injection system. And, the port fuel injectors are not there to clean the intake valves; these injectors work to provide fuel to the engine. Both sets of injectors work together for the best possible fuel mixture in the cylinder. During high engine load periods, only the direct-type fuel injection is used to cool down the intake air with the chilling effect of vapors in the fuel, which is injected into the cylinder, improving charge efficiency and anti-knock properties. Under some conditions, the intake valves open to allow the homogeneous air/fuel mixture into the combustion chamber, and fuel is injected during the first half of the intake stroke. The use of this hybrid system reduce soot formation and also reduce deposits on intake valves of these engines which plague DI engines after 50 to 60K miles. Audi and Ford are adopting Toyota system and others will likely as well.

Toyota Avalon is not type approved for Europe, Lexus ES is. Here in europe ES is only available with hybrid power train, similar to Toyota Camry, which is the flagship Toyota around here. Camry shares the same platform with both ES and Avalon. Camry was the first to have the latest version of the 3.5 V6 with d-4S direct/port injection and open source OS based on Linux. All three models have their own variant of the V6 with similar power output, where available.
