At this point of time, it’s no secret that Proton is working on its next model – the Geely Haoyue-based Proton X90. Said model was first spotted on Malaysian soil back in May, just weeks before MCO 3.0 was enforced.
This time around, a reader sent in photos of a heavily taped-up development mule at the Genting Sempah car park to our friends over at Careta – the very same car park the Proton Preve was spotted many moons ago.
Curiously, this particular development mule wears a very different camouflage compared to the one first spotted in May.
Now, although Proton has yet to reveal the upcoming model’s name, judging from their current naming convention, the upcoming Geely Haoyue-based SUV could very likely receive the X90 name, positioning it above the X70.
That said, despite its X90 name, when the model goes on sale in Malaysia, expect pricing arrangement of the X90 to mirror the Proton X50 and Proton X70, in which prices of the top-spec Proton X50 overlaps the low-spec Proton X70.
Although the Haoyue / X90 is physically larger than the Proton X70, it cannot be priced too far from the latter, as the Haoyue / X90 isn’t as premium as Geely tries to portray it to be. Unlike other recently-launched Geely models, the Haoyue is not developed on the BMA or CMA platform, but rather a curiously-named CV platform. The CV platform made its debut on the Geely Jiaji.
While the CV platform is newer than the Boyue's NL3 platform (Boyue was launched in 2016), it is not as sophisticated as the Binyue / X50's BMA platform.
At the heart of the China-spec Geely Haoyue lies a turbocharged 1.8-litre petrol engine (184 PS, 300 Nm) mated to a seven-speed DCT – the same combination found in the Proton X70.
