With the launch of the all-new 2023 Toyota Vios in Thailand, badged as the Yaris Ativ in the Kingdom, there is a new leader in the B-segment sedan sales. For the second month in a row, the all-new Vios has outsold its perennial rival, the Honda City according to Thai sales data.

3,384 units of the Yaris Ativ were sold in September 2022, up by 211 units from the month before which saw the global debut of the newest generation of Toyota’s popular B-segment sedan.

Up till September, a total of 18,036 units of the Yaris Ativ have been sold in the Kingdom. This combined total also includes the previous generation but the numbers show that it has slightly overtaken the Honda City which sold 17,192 units in the same period so far.

With four variants available and plenty of features (telescopic steering!), perhaps it's no wonder that many Thai buyers are favouring the all-new Yaris Ativ/Vios over the City. The looks can be a bit divisive but will it grow on you? We'll have to wait until we see one in the flesh.

While Toyota is celebrating at the top, it also took the bottom spot in the B-segment sedan sales for September with only 25 units of the 1.5-litre Toyota Vios sold that month. The Yaris Ativ is powered by a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated engine to comply with Thailand’s Eco Car regulations but make outside the Kingdom, it is likely to get a bigger engine including a 1.5-litre unit.

Elsewhere in the sales chart, the Mazda 2 Sedan takes third place in September with 755 units sold while the MG 5, which is more of a C-segment sedan but priced like a B-segment, follows behind with 646 cars sold.

Despite outselling the Toyota Vios by 57 cars in September, the Suzuki Ciaz remains at the bottom in terms of overall sales between January and September. The S badge team should probably hold the champagne showers for not being at the bottom for once.
