All-new 2023 Toyota Innova to be a lot more expensive - Switching from CKD to CBU Indonesia, starting price above RM 150k?

Ever since Toyota debuted the first-generation Toyota Innova back in 2004, the model was locally-assembled (CKD) at the ASSB plant in Shah Alam.
However, upon the introduction of the all-new TNGA-C-based 2023 Toyota Innova Zenix, data from Indonesia's automotive industry association GAIKINDO revealed that Toyota Indonesia has exported roughly 200 units of the model to Malaysia back in April, including several units of a curiously-named "H" variant.
Further cementing that notion is a set of spyshot photos taken of the Innova Zenix on a vehicle carrier with the ACV70 Camry (CBU Thailand), caught by a reader of The Ajerul. Said reader mentioned that the photos were shot near Westport, Klang.
PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) has a plant in Karawang, which is the regional production hub for the Toyota Innova Zenix. Said plant also exports the MPV to countries like the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Malaysia will be the next country that TMMIN exports to.
UMW Toyota Motor currently offers two variants of the AN140-generation Innova, the Innova 2.0G and 2.0X, with prices starting from RM 133,880 and tops out at RM 141,880.
Upon the introduction of the all-new 2023 Toyota Innova Zenix, prices could see an increase. Despite Malaysia and Indonesia being members under ATIGA, ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement, which allows for import duty exemption, Malaysia still imposes excise duty on ASEAN-manufactured cars. In the case of the Innova Zenix, its MPV body style and 2.0-litre engine are subjected to 75 percent excise duty.
Also, because it is CBU, the Indonesia-made Innova is not eligible for excise duty rebates that CKD cars are entitled to, depending on the value of their local content.
As such, when UMW Toyota Motor launches the all-new 2023 Toyota Innova Zenix later this year, don’t expect the model to be priced at current levels. A circa-RM 150k starting price is possible for the entry-level variant, while the hybrid variant would be priced even higher.
This brings us to the next question. For that price, wouldn’t it be wiser to buy a recond Toyota Voxy instead?
