Geely is now open for business in Mexico, via its own national sales company (NSC) Geely Mexico. Leading the charge into Mexico is the Geely Coolray (also known as Binyue in China), the donor car for our Proton X50.

The China-made Coolray launched in Mexico is the new look, facelifted 2024 model.

Powertrain is identical to our Proton X50 TGDi Flagship variant, a 1.5-litre turbocharged direct injection three-cylinder (TGDi) paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Curiously, the Mexican version is tuned for higher torque (but with a narrower band) and lower power output.

The Mexican Coolray makes 174 PS at 5,500 rpm / 290 Nm at 2,000 – 3,500 rpm, versus our Proton X50’s 177 PS at 5,500 rpm / 255 Nm at 1,500 – 4,000 rpm. Our local Proton has lower peak torque, but it’s spread over a wider rev range for a more effortless drive.

The lower 150 PS power output port fuel injection variant is not offered in Mexico.

Inside, the Mexican Coolray benefits from a new dashboard design, with a one-piece integrated dual digital display that combines a 10.2-inch instrument panel with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen.

While Geely stubbornly refuses to offer non-Chinese app-based infotainment to Proton, the Mexican Geely Coolray comes equipped with Apple CarPlay. It still lacks Android Auto though.

Apart from the Coolray, Geely also launched the fully electric (BEV) Geely Geometry C. The electric C-segment SUV has a 70 kWh battery, with a WLTP-rated driving range of 485 km.
