honda city aria Q&A Review

What are the different classes of cars and what do they exactly mean?

An SUV is a multi terrain vehicle with generally high ground clearance and seating capacity of either 7 or 5 people depending upon the class of SUV. The SUVs are generally huge in size and have the option of 4 wheel drive (4wd). E.g.- Toyota fortuner, tata safari and the likes. MUV is also a 7 seater car but more towards the sedan type with low ground clearance. It can be called as a cross between a sedan and a SUV. It is more passenger oriented with more importance given to the passenger comfort. E.g.- Toyota innova, tata aria, maruti Suzuki ertiga etc. Sedan is a 5 seater car with specially dedicates boot space which we commonly call the dikki of the car. These cars are high on comfort too. They are generally rear wheel drive or front wheel drive but never both. E.g.- Honda city/civic, Hyundai Verna, Toyota Camry etc. A hatch back is a small car with a seating capacity of 5. It is best suitable for city driving as its small in size. E.g.- maruti 800, maruti Suzuki swift, Hyundai i20 etc.

Which cars sold in India do you think were just too excessive or flashy for most people?

There were and still are many such cars coming under the category of being ‘excessive’ or ‘flashy’, at least based on its design. While some turned out to be a success, others weren't liked mainly due to one reason or the other. In this list, I am not involving premium brands such as BMW, Audi, Mercedes Benz, Jaguar etc. because there are too many of them being sold here. Above that, they are pretty expensive for the common man here to both buy and maintain. When asked, many of us will have different choices depending on the way they see the car. So, here are seven such cars that I picked coming under this category: Standard 2000. The first car model in this list is probably a blast from the past for Indians. The Standard 2000, when launched in 1985 looked like a car that was a generation ahead of anything seen on Indian roads back in the day. It was built in partnership with Austin Rover of the UK. On design, the Standard 2000 had various bits inspired from the iconic Ferrari Daytona, but there was something else behind its beautiful design. The car was resulted to a lot of toothing problems and minor breakdowns, which infuriated the customers. Above that there was also talk that the engine felt underpowered, with the car reaching the 0-60 kmph mark in 8.9 seconds. This was about 0.4 seconds slower than the Hindustan Contessa and 1.7 seconds slower than the Maruti 800. With a drop in demand, the Standard 2000 was finally discontinued in 1988. But all wasn't that bad as the Standard 2000 was offered with features unheard of back in the day like electric windows, central locking system, power steering and a cigarette lighter. 2., ,Daewoo Cielo. We all remember the good old Cielo. Launched in 1995, it turned out to be India’s first such luxury vehicle designed and developed entirely by a foreign company. Though the Opel Astra came a while later, it was the Cielo which turned out to be the segment bestseller back then, which also involved the Mahindra Ford Escort. The Cielo sold steadily till the arrival of more affordable sedans like the Honda City and the Mitsubishi Lancer in 1997. In fact, Daewoo also launched a more powerful version of it sold as the Nexia. But the Cielo was slowly losing ground to much more cheaper rivals. Daewoo tried their best in bringing customers to their showrooms by offering Cielo’s at price cuts. This saw the Cielo get a handful of customers before it got discontinued in 2001. This was because Daewoo were readying the Leganza for India before the company eventually folded up in 2002. 3., ,Honda Civic (first generation for India). The Honda Civic is one such car which has earned a cult status amongst Indians over the years. It was launched in the 2006 model year and looked like something from the future. The low-slung look of the car as well as beautifully designed cuts on the headlamps and tail-lamps made for a picturesque viewing. In fact, when the Civic was running on the roads pepole on the roadside would more often take some time off from their respective work to have a small glance at it. The Civic was feature-packed as well and despite the car commanding a premium, pepole still went to Honda showrooms to acquire it. This made the Civic gain some stardom amongst the masses, which it rightly deserved to. Despite all the positives it had, it couldn't quite save the premium sedan segment back then. It was surprisingly discontinued in 2012 owing to poor sales numbers. Enthusiasts love the Civic and there are so many examples of well maintained Civic’s one can find in various parts of the country. 4. Honda CR-V (second generation for India). Next in this list comes another Honda in the form of the CR-V. Like the Civic, the CR-V also came to Indian shores during the 2006 model year. It had a very sleek design theme and was better than anything that was offered in its segment. Most importantly, it replaced the boxy looking first generation CR-V, which was kind of feeling its age back then. It also had a smooth flowing 2.0 litre petrol engine that further made it a desirable buy. The absence of proper rivals also helped the CR-V, which was slotted in between the Nissan X-Trail and Ford Endeavour territory. It didn't take long to conquer the premium SUV segment like its predecessor. Neither did Honda worry about new competitors entering the segment like the Mitsubishi Outlander and Renault Koleos. It registered decent sales numbers overall before it got discontinued in early 2015. 5. Hyundai Elantra (second generation for India). During the early 2010’s, Hyundai were famed for having beautiful looking designs on their cars. The Fluidic Sculpture design theme enabled the Korean automaker to produce a lot of attractive designs on their cars that went on to succeed in India. One such vehicle was the Hyundai Elantra, which arguably was the best looking Hyundai car to come out with the company's popular design theme. Compare it the first generation of the Elantra launched here in 2004 and you would see a massive improvement just 8 years apart from each other. The original Elantra didn't do well for Hyundai, who as a result skipped its next generation for India. The second generation Elantra for India went on to create a similar hype compared to the Civic during its launch. Despite that, the Elantra managed to close in on the sales leader, which was the Toyota Corolla. Rivals like Renault, Volkswagen and even Toyota recently exited the segment but Hyundai still have some faith in it. The Elantra is being constantly upgraded by the automaker and its new generation was slated for a launch in 2021. 6. Hyundai Creta (first generation for India). When Hyundai launched the Creta in 2015, there was a lot of talk surrounding it and rightly so. It had the typical Hyundai values such as an attractive design, long list of features and a good amount of space. In fact, it entered the SUV segment here of which Hyundai had bad memories of with the Tucson and Terracan. But, the Creta turned out to be third time lucky for the automaker, registering record sales and topping the segment with ease. All that was done with Hyundai charging a premium for it, which was itself astonishing. That didn't mean that the Creta was charged expensive, it had a strong engine and interior quality pretty much belonged to a segment above it. Thus, one of the strong selling points of the Creta was its flashy design which attracted a lot of eyebrows. Hyundai established itself as a brand here with the Creta and despite the questionable looks of the current model, it still remains a vehicle in good demand. For that, Hyundai has to be forever thankful to the first generation Creta. 7. Tata Nexon. When Tata Motors first unveiled the production version of the Nexon, it had a lot of similarities with its concept form. The Nexon concept was first unveiled during the 2014 Auto Expo and received a lot of attention due to its attractive styling. Honestly, pepole couldn't believe that it was a Tata and most of them even pinched themselves to believe it. Keeping that aside, the Nexon went on to represent a new landmark in the design department of Tata Motors. It was done because Tata Motors were not doing well in the passenger car business back then. The homegrown automaker were running into extensive losses due to them selling ageing models. With the Nexon, that has been resurrected to some extent. It holds the unique distinction of being the first ever Indian car to get a 5 star rating during the Global NCAP crash tests. The Nexon, even with an update coming earlier this year is amongst the Tata vehicles being in good demand today. With that, I would like to conclude this list. There were many such cars like the Mahindra XUV500, Tata Aria, Ford Ecosport etc., which i didn't include because I wanted to provide some variety between different segments. These are just my personal opinion and feel free to speak about yours in the comments. Hope you enjoyed reading it while I was really thrilled in presenting them to you. Thank you.

What is the best SUV in India to buy if I'm looking for lot of luggage space and to drive on highly bad conditioned roads?

If you are looking for ₹5,00,000 you can get very few choices. Ford Eco sport - This is a very compact suv and Maintainance is on a higher side as compared to other models. If your running is less than 15 kms per day ,you can always go for it but before buying please check all the previous records. Mahindra Scorpio - It is a very stable, sturdy and strong in built. Honda Crv - You might get older version or the first model for this price. Good Suv but running average is very low around 5Kpl in Mumbai city. Dont buy Tata Aria if you get it for free as after you buy Maintainance would be more than the new car . Hope this is helpful. Happy Driving.

What's the best way to buy a used car?

Buying a second hand car and trying to find something value for money are the same thing. One should look for cars which have poor resale value but are a fine piece of engineering in terms of reliability. By reliability I mean low breakdown history, affordable spares and good mileage on top of that. Keeping these three on mind, let's start the list TATA cars : They make good cars but have no resale value. Mileage is good, reliable cars with cheap spares, but completely ignored by Indian mass due to bad marketing. Tata Indigo manza , bolt , Indigo and indica are all good. If someone looking for SUV , then Safari and Aria are one of the better cars on road in terms of practicality. Ford /Fiat cars : Good build quality affordable spares, excellent engineering. Ford figo , Linea, Punto are all great cars to have one. Nissan Sunny : One of the most underrated cars of our recent times. Everything is perfect for this car, and if you get hold of a pre-owned one, consider yourself lucky. Maruti Suzuki Alto , Wagon r Honda Civic, City old versions. Hindustan motors ambassador, though out of production, if you are in eastern part of India and want to drive a classic, then no other car is such value for money Hope this list helps Edit1 : Here are few tips and approximate cost in Indian rupees for the checks and repairs which might be needed while buying an used car. Let's break it up step by step for your benefit. Body: Check for any rusts, visible and under the rubber moulding that runs across the body panels, across doors. Surface rust is acceptable bit it should not be very much so that you might need to spend another 40k to repair (denting and painting) Suspension: rotate the tyres towards outside and check whether the shocks are leaking oil, the bushes are torn, the rubber parts between the metal joints are worn out. Any unnecessary sounds while going over a bump including point 3 means the suspension needs a overhauling. That might cost you around 30k. Steering: Should not be hard and should not make sounds while turning left to right ir vice versa. Should not pull to one side while driving. Any repairs would cost around 10k brakes: Should not squeal while braking and should not feel spongy. Any one of these, cost can go up to 7k. Engine: The most important part. Start with Idling RPM. Should not be rough and can have a fluctuations upto 100 rpm. Engine should not have any kat kat sound, it means injectors are choked or failing. Repair cost 15k per injector There should not oil leakage at exhaust manifold side. too much oil leakage means failing gaskets. price low but labour cost would be high for replacement. White smoke should not come out of exhaust, means engine oil is leaking out. Turbo should not make any swoosing sounds, repair costs upto 40k No check engine light or oil pressure light should be present. Engine should be allowed to reach operating temperature to see for problems. Engine overhauling costs around 70k Alternator light should not be there as with time alternator fails. Repair cost around 12k Last but not the least, if you are purchasing the car with above problems, deduct the repair costs and then go for it. Hope this helps.

Why aren't Tata cars (especially Tiago, tigor and altroz) unable to reach the numbers that Hyundai and Maruti cars easily do (5000+ of many models per month), Despite so many recommendation, best NCAP rating and decent build Quality + good features?

Hi I can answer the question because i have both a Hyundai(Xcent SX PETROL CNG) and a TATA(Nexon XZ Petrol ) Also i had an extra chance to own a Maruti before TATA until Dec 2020. So the basic reason is the word of mouth publicity and it goes both ways good and the bad and results are proportional to the word of mouth publicity. These are effected by various factors. Frankly speaking TATA always had good well built and drivable cars in their stable starting from the Rusty SUMO to SAFARI from INDICA to INDIGO Manza, they had a fairly large network of car dealership and service network. The proof of being good cars are they were feature rich they gave all 4 power windows in early 1990's with Sierra, a 4×4 with alloy wheel and turbocharged in Safari. Their SUMO could load upto 10 people in it and didn't get tired. They were the first to introduced a sub 4 meter sedan with Indigo which had its interior done in such a way that it looked far more spacious than Dezire or xcent even at the back row. Plus their cars was specifically used for Commercial purposes rather than personal uses and it is to be considered that in commercial purpose the cars are used pretty roughly still they were preferred over others untill Diesel cars were restricted to be used as commercial purposes in area like DELHI-NCR. Their network was third biggest in India after Maruti and Hyundai. But the failed in living upto the consumer experience especially after sales service. The staff at the dealership used to be very rude, not efficient and effective plus they didn't had effective advertising strategies. Whereas the other giants like Maruti and Hyundai focused on increasing the level.of the consumer satisfaction they delivered in After Sales. The result was that they maintained their lead over others TATA was moved from 3rd largest Indian manufacturer to 5th largest and companies like ford. The best part what have changed: Tata since 2010 worked upon a completely fresh concepts (since they bought Land Rover and Jaguars from Ford in 2008) of Safety, Performance, Reliability and After sales services. The cars launched after 2010 and before 2017 were like Bolt, Zest, Aria etc. They were just experiments with touch screens, drive mode like city, eco and sports, safety features like ABS, AIRBAGS, CORNER STABILITY PROGRAMS as standard in their cars. Since 2017 they started revolution with in themselves and their service centres. Brought in new cars like Tiago, Tigor and Nexon, Hexa etc… that were feature loaded many times with first in class features. The things with service centre were sorted out non performers were closed new ones were supported. They have updated their models in an revolutionary manner they have stopped Hexa non performing car (although being a superbly feature rich and well built car) upgraded their tiago and tigor almost twice since launch, Nexon once and its almost a whole new car in 2020 than it was in 2017, Harrier once in 2020 with whole lot of new features and better powered engine of 170Ps. Latest now they have launched Safari(formerly known as GRAVITAS) The service centre guys and experience has been reformed totally… they are far more polite and effectively efficient, in case of any dispute the top management comes to action swiftly. Results are like these 1. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd 2. Hyundai Motor India Limited 3. ,Tata Motors Ltd 4. Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd 5. Honda Cars India Ltd. 6. Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private Limited 7. Ford India 8. Renault India 9. Nissan 10. Volkswagen. They have beaten global manufacturing giants like Honda, Ford, Toyota and many others etc. Its takes time to adapt to the change. The company has done its part, people of India will also change their level of acceptance. Just to inform this is totally based upon my experience of buying a Tata after Dec 2020, my experience with the vehicle its comfort, performance, value for money and the way service centre entertained me.
