honda civic rust Q&A Review

What are some lies car mechanics tell?

I owned a older Honda Civic that had a very stiff clutch pedal. The previous owner had mentioned it, before I purchased the vehicle. At the time it didn't seem like a big deal, so at my first opportunity I proceeded to drive my car across Canada. 4400 kms later I found myself at a Honda dealer, requesting a diagnostic on the clutch issue. The service manager advised me that I needed a new clutch. I didn't have the money for the repair, so I thanked the man and said I would have to live with it. The problem got worse as I made the return trip back, to the point where I literally had to lock my leg and kick the clutch pedal, hard, each time I had to shift gears. Another 4400 kms later, I was home again, rolled into my parking space, and downshifted to first. There was an audible snap as the clutch pedal went right to the floor. The clutch cable had, over several years, rusted from the inside out, to the point where the cable had failed. I installed a replacement clutch cable the next day, for about $30.

Are there any AWD or RWD Honda Civics?

In the past, yes. I used to drive a 1985 Honda Civic wagon with push-button 4wd, and a six speed manual transmission. It had five normal forward gears and a “super low” gear only usable with 4wd engaged. None of this was custom or aftermarket, the car left the factory in this configuration. It was a great car. I junked it when it rusted, sadly.

I bought a 1999 Honda Civic LX for $300; it’s my first car and has 145k miles with no major problems besides possibly the transmission. Someone offered $1000 for it: should I sell it and buy a better car, or hold onto it, in your opinion?

FLIP that sucker! There is only ONE reason why anyone would offer $1000 for a twenty-year-old Honda with any obvious mechanical trouble: He's building a “rice rocket” . He probably intends to replace and upgrade the engine, driveline, and suspension with performance grade parts and add-ons. The $1000 offer is more for the ,cosmetic appearance ,of the car than for its running condition. He's looking for a project car with a solid chassis and body to build on. NOTE: if your Honda is a rust bucket... ignore the above. But honestly? ,Take the money and RUN!

How long can a Honda civic car last?

Forever?! Regular maintenance is good definitely but the other thing I’d want to know is that someone has been driving it regularly. Old cars that just sit around worry me because I feel like plastic parts and seals get dry because nothing is lubricating them. Parts can rust and seize up too. My daughter is driving a 1999 Honda Accord that seems like it has a lot of life left. She just put Apple Car Play in it so she has Bluetooth and Nav and she drives it daily. I see lots of young boys (usually boys) that work on old Honda’s. When I was younger we would call them ‘pocket rockets’. With all that rough treatment and amateur wrenching they are still zipping around just fine. So my guess is that it’ll last until you don’t want it anymore. And after that give it to a kid who needs a first car!

What's more reliable: Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla?

My sister had the 1990 sedan model Honda Civic in manual shift. I learnt to drive on that car. The car was smaller than the Civics that came out later in the 2000s and 2010s, less comfortable, less powerful but reliable. My roommate had a CRX that was also 86–90 period but by 94 he had rust problems on the body, engine noise problems. Maybe due to Eastern US harsh cold weather as it was parked outside and the long distance driving. Toyota Corolla from the 70s to early 2000 were fun to drive. By 2003 Toyota decided to make them bigger focus more on comfort than performance. Civic models from 2000 to 2006 went through the same strategy but luckily from 2006 Honda went for more sportier look and more performance driven in Europe. Honda is more original in the shapes it gives to its cars. I think overall both Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla score high marks in reliability. I bought my Euro hatchback diesel Civic in 2009. I have no engine, clutch or engine problems. I have a lot of electrical issues since 2015 and issues related to body work and axle, more related to a couple of accidents than to quality issues with the car. I have not even had problems with the diesel engine. I have seen more Toyota Corolla on the road from 80s to early 00s here in Switzerland. It seems that the name change to Auris was not widely accepted by Customers and it seems that the Auris has had it hard with CVT automatic transmission, which they are also using in the new 2017 model Civics and maybe reliability issues. Most car companies have found it hard to compete against the VW group in Europe with a big pallet of car types and car brands available from VW, Audi, SEAT, SKODA to Porsche. BMW has also started to cater to the middle to the higher middle class income range customers with the 1 series, 2 series, X1 and X2. My conclusion is that if you go for a manual Civic, it is going to be more fun to drive more reliable. An old manual Corolla would do the trick as well but less fun to drive. You will find it hard to find a new Corolla that is manual and is not CVT. In Switzerland, the hatchback and the sedan version of the 2017 Civic is available in manual and CVT. My guess is that rest of EU it must be the same.

Should food stamp recipients be barred from purchasing seafood and chips?

DISCLAIMER: I do not get SNAP. I had it for about 4 months and then was tossed off the books. I was getting a grand $16 bucks a month. That’s 50 cents a day. Now… zero. So wait… you’re going to help me by restricting what I can purchase to what YOU think is good for me? H’mmm. I think I LIKE that idea. It sure will help. But you know… I need help in so many areas… so how about this? You can help me a lot! You see… The place I’m living… it’s not really good for me, you know? Break ins, crime… how about you restricting me to someplace nicer. Now since I cannot pay a higher rent, you’ll have to subsidize me, but hey, I’m more than willing to take your advice. And the car my partner drives… it’s old. You know what they say about older cars… they’re less safe… bad for me, you know. How about you restricting me to a safer, newer car? You know… a brand new Honda Civic… there we go! Nice, safe, it even gets better gas mileage! Thanks! That was real sweet of you to pick up the payments for me. Now… shoes… I can’t afford good shoes, and being diabetic, I need some advice and help… could you… wait… where are you going? I don’t understand… I thought you wanted to help me! What? You have too much stuff of your own to worry about? That makes TWO of us, Pal. Tell you what… you stop peeking into my grocery cart… and I’ll stop peeking into yours! I know… you really really REALLY want to stop waste in government. I don’t blame you one tiny bit! So… how about you go have a look here… See all those? Did you know that MANY of those planes have not flown ONE INCH? Nope! Never left the ground! Not even ONCE. Look at all those fighter jets! WOWEE! Hughes Aircraft, McDonnel Douglas, Boeing all those military contractors selling us fighters that will never fight, aircraft that will never see a cloud… they sit… and they RUST… some of those babies are several ,TENS/HUNDREDS OF ,MILLION dollars APIECE! And you’re worrying about me buying seafood. Didja know that seafood includes that can of tuna in my cart? The $0.98 one on the bottom shelf. You want me to stop buying *that*, but you’re just FINE with the government buying… and scrapping these? Yes THOSE… Humvees. Abandoned. How much you think those cost, per vehicle? Or maybe these are more economical than that can of tuna… Those babies are ,M,1 Abrams tanks. Scrapped. I wonder how many cans of tuna you prevented me from buying would pay for one of those. But THIS is what has your knickers in a knot… My friend… you need to work on your priorities. OK? Peace.

What make and model of car lasts longest?

I have studied Consumer Reports for years to determine who builds the best cars. Definition of “best” is subjective of course because it could be the best engineered, fastest, best handling, fuel efficient and reliability. If we simply focus on which one lasts the longest…..it could very well be the old American domestic tanks such as Crown Victorias or Chevy Impalas. But who would want to own one unless you are a taxi company? They do not handle well, they are gas guzzlers and unattractive and will fill a whole double car garage with room remaining only for a couple of bicycles. The longest lasting cars will be based on mechanical endurance, engine size and vitality, on rust resistance, integrity of chassis, strut components, electrical and so on. Bigger engines tend to last longer because they are not strained in regards to load and mountainous roads. The longest lasting cars will also be affected by how they are driven. If they are abused with stop and go and excessive load and speeds, they will not last as long. So we have to assume that our contenders will be based on average driving conditions in a moderate climate that has no severe or extreme weather conditions. The most reliable cars should last the longest unless they have integrity or rust problems. Toyota and Honda vehicles have been the most reliable with Subarus a close second. They have now been challenged by Kia and Hyundai….The specific models will include Toyota Avalon, Honda Accord, Subaru Legacy, Kia Optima and Hyundai Genesis. Since most of these have V6 engines or smaller, they do not qualify for the longest lasting. So which cars qualify? The vehicles with V8 engines will last the longest because they do not have to work as hard as smaller engines…..rpm’s are under 2,000 on highway speeds of 70–80 mph. If we combine reliability and engine size….we are left with the Toyota Sequoia versus the Chevy Suburban and the Toyota Tundra versus the GMC Yukon….all with V8 engines and Toyotas being the most reliable, the final two contestants would be the Toyota Sequoia or the Toyota Tundra…..the choice is yours. If fuel efficiency is more important…..consider a Honda Civic or a Toyota Prius. If a balance of fuel efficiency and power is a preference…..consider the Toyota Camry or the Honda Accord. All of the above recommended vehicles will easily top over 200,000 miles with nominal problems. Please bear in mind however that this analysis is based on current information. Future results may vary but Toyotas and Hondas have been the top most reliable, longest lasting vehicles in the past 40 years.

How can the UK honestly view their healthcare as better than that of the US?

I presume that you’re on crack, right? Even Mexico has better health-care than the USA, based on affordability. A retired friend slipped in the bathtub in her apartment in Mexico and woke up in a pool of blood. She called the emergency number. The ambulance took her to the closest ER where she had 7 stitches put in her head, and an X-Ray to check for internal damage or a concussion. She was released the next day. She’s a South African who lived in Canada and has no medical insurance at all. She got a bill for US$18.45 and that included the ambulance ride. My cousin came from Chicago to a family re-union in a rusted out Honda Civic. She was driven by her son, who had his driver’s license more than 5 years. She is broke, because she is still paying the medical expenses from her son’s birth nearly a quarter century ago! Thailand has better medical care than the US. Of course, the UK and Canada are WAY better. Everyone knows that. Except you, apparently. This question is a joke, right?

Have you ever owned a car, that to be honest, was a pile of junk, but it just kept going and served you well? What make and model was it?

Oh goodness yes. I had a 1977 Honda Civic CVCC. Yellow, butt-ugly, and rusted out. (Not this exact one, but it looked just like this.) This car was ,primitive., It did have air conditioning, a very rare factory add-on from Honda, and as a result had no glove compartment—the air conditioning coils went in where the glove compartment used to be. It had a manual choke. (How many people still alive, I wonder, know how to use a manual choke? Lots of modern drivers would be unable to start it.) It had Honda’s hopelessly weird-ass CVCC (Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion) engine with two combustion chambers per cylinder, one that burned a rich fuel mixture and then the flame front spilled out into the larger chamber that burned a lean mixture to ignite the gas. The flame front caused even ignition without knocking, so you could run it on a leaner than normal mixture overall, which meant (a) ferocious fuel economy (about 46–48 MPG) and (b) no catalytic converter. I did a ton of stuff to that car. I ripped out the vacuum-advance distributor and replaced it with a centrifugal-advance distributor. I ripped out the carburetor and replaced it with a Weber 4-barrel, which did weird things to the fuel mix and meant I had to do some…odd tuning, but hey, it got a lot more power. (I used an enormous low-profile air cleaner that fit under the hood without modification, but just barely. Air filters were expensive, though.) I beat the hell out of that car and it never let me down. I got it four feet off the ground with three passengers—long story—and even that didn’t faze it. I got it high centered on a rock (another long story) that bent the shift rod just enough I could only use half the gears…so I drove it that way until I could afford to fix it. God I miss that car.

If I daily drived a car in Toronto and maintained it well, when should rust appear and then start to wear out on a car like 2016 Honda Civic or Kia Forte?

I recently spent two weeks in Ontario, driving in total about 2,500 kms around Toronto, Kingston, Niagara Falls, and further afield to Ottawa and Montréal. Once thing I noticed that surprised me was the small, but significant, number of (oldish) cars with ,very ,noticeable rust on the bodywork. It reminded me of cars back in the UK 20 years or more ago. When I started driving in the mid-70s, cars rusted. Badly! A 10-year old car back then would usually be well on its way to the scrapheap with significant rust. But since then improvements in design and manufacturing have meant that cars now really don’t have noticeable rust, even at quite an advanced age. Neither my wife’s 12 year-old car, nor my daughter’s 14 year-old car have ,any ,rust that you can see on the bodywork. And they are typical of cars on the roads here. I’m not sure if cars built for the North American market are built to a different standard, or if it’s a result of the rather more severe winters - and more salt/grit on the roads than we have in the UK. I’d be interested if anyone has any thoughts on this!
