Bill Gates decides to give you $10 billion. What do you do with it?

I'd probably take half a billion for myself, more than I'll ever need. Another half billion gets split with my family and some good friends. I'd take $1 billion and invest it in condos and home to rent out. I would setup a charitable foundation with the remaining, $8 billion, in a trust fund a portion of which is to be invested to generate additional income, and pay insurance for those in need. You don't have to be completely impoverished to not get proper insurance. The middle class makes enough moneyy to live well enough but still often can't afford decent insurance premiums. Especially those with invisible disabilities. Who can only work part time if at all. The foundation would also contribute to my 3 other favorite charities, Habitat for Humanity, Women in Distress, and cancer research As well as fund my local no-kill animal shelter. I’m thinking another section of the foundation, would deal with funding medical research for many orphans diseases such as fibromyalgia, meniere’s, ME, and a dozen others. The foundation would also be given the power to gift money, grants and loans and scholarships to deserving individuals. A lot of this would be discussed with people who know a lot more than I do about it. But the most important thing is that those who manage the foundation, have oversight and limited authority. Last thing I want is for someone to take money away from those who need it to pad their own pockets. Checks and balances would need to be put in place. With that much money, I don't trust any one person. As for my half billion, STOP COLLECTING DISABILITY, SNAP benefits and Medicaid. I think I'd like to find a nice, comfortable house. Not too big but big enough that I can have my privacy, studio and pool. I would also want to ensure I have as small a carbon footprint as possible so the house would have to be upgraded or changed to include solar panels and other ways of reducing my carbon footprint. I'd also prefer a full time maid/caregiver and butler/handyman. Will probably set a million aside as a household slush fund for taxes, utilties, etc. Get a new car. Though I will probably keep Rosy, my 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander since I love this car. She only has 75,000 miles on it and is still in great condition. But I do want a newer one, the hybrid, with all the bells and whistles. Get the best Medicare advantage plan I can afford so I can get my health and disability manageable again. Get the injections for my knees and joints to put off the arthritis and replace some completely gone cartilage. Definitely hire a nutritionist to cook for me. Maybe even a personal trainer. Total makeover, new clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc. Hey, I'm a girl! Who knows, aybe a fat camp in Palm Springs. Take my BFF on a trip around the world, first class. Cruise one of the Celebrity ships across the Atlantic, stay on the same ship to follow their itinerary either cruising the fjords of Norway or down to the Greek Isles for another month. Spend the summer tooling around Europe, Great Britain including Scotland and Ireland, London (one of my favorite cities so far), the Loire Valley, Paris (second favorite city), Spain, Germany, Italy, Brussels, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Switzerland, Norway, and more. When summer ends, take the ship back to the states where my new house has been put in order according to my directions. Of course I might have to fly back and forth a few times to check up on things but as long as I can fly first class, I’m good. I also want to visit Hawaii, Japan, Korea, China, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Alaska and tour the whole United States in a large bus sized luxury RV with a Miata attached like my uncle did. Every summer he'd take off and visit Canada including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec City and Montreal on the east coast. Then head west to Ottawa for a day or two, move on to Toronto over to Manitoba, Saskatoon, Calgary and finally Vancouver. He made a lot of friends. It may take a few summers to do all this but I would really like to visit all 50 states. To see Niagra Falls, the Giant Sequoias in Yosemite, the Redwood Forest in California and drive my Miata through it, visit Seattle, Portland and San Francisco, where I can go down to the Fisherman’s Market and Chinatown for some really good ears. See the wonderul national parks in Utah, say hi to some online friends in Wisconsin, Detroit, North Dakota and maybe help them out a bit. See the Grand Canyon in person, play awhile in Reno or Las Vegas or both. See Hawaii, New Mexico, Texas, and every other state. LA I'm not so hot for though I would love to visit Venice beach. Of course this will take years of summers and a few winters so I'll need to take care of myself to live long enough to to it. Even if my BFF can't go with me every time, I wouldn't mind going alone either. Aside from the things I can now buy for people I love, my life wouldn't change all that much once I came home. I know that many people say they won't change and I won't. I'll just become more of what I've always been. A hedonistic, fun loving, compassionate, generous woman who now has the funds to party and help others the way I've always done my entire life. Hence why I have no money right now. LOL I wonder how long it will take me to blow through $500 mil. I'm not one to buy stupid extravagant things like giant gold statues, or all gold plumbing, or a $2 million diamond necklace. (Shudder) That's just not me. And even when I do buy things, I've got to bargain and get the best rate for what I want. Though I wouldn't mind owning a few genuine works of art. A Picasso perhaps, and definitely a Jackson Pollak. After all, that's who I named my cat after. LOL I want to thank the OP for this question.
