The Mitsubishi Outlander might be an aging SUV but that doesn’t stop it from getting a 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.

The safety body has previously tested the Outlander, but that model was the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant. It is interesting to note that the Outlander PHEV scored higher than the non-hybrid variant (86.75 points versus 83.54 points).

The Proton X70 still gets a higher score than both the hybrid and non-hybrid variants of the Outlander with 89.24 points.

The petrol-powered Outlander tested was the Vietnamese-spec model which is assembled there. Surprisingly, the Vietnamese-spec Outlander is better equipped than the Malaysian-spec model in terms of safety equipment.

The Vietnamese-spec Outlander comes with an ADAS suite that includes blind-spot monitors, AEB, and FCW, either as standard or optional. Recall that the Segambut-assembled Outlander doesn’t come equipped with these features.

However, when it comes to the adult occupant protection (AOP) scores, the petrol-powered Outlander only offers adequate protection to the driver’s chest and lower limbs in the frontal and side-impact tests.
