The Toyota Yaris Cross will be entering the ASEAN region soon, as a scoop from Thailand’s headlightmag revealed.
While the Yaris Cross name is identical to the already-on-sale, TNGA-B-based model that’s offered in Singapore, Japan, and Europe, this upcoming Yaris Cross will be different.

Instead of the pricey TNGA-B platform, the ASEAN Yaris Cross will be underpinned by the DNGA platform, similar to the D92A / AC100 Toyota Vios, Perodua Ativa, Perodua Alza, and soon-to-be launched D74A Perodua Axia.
According to headlightmag’s sources, the new Yaris Cross, codenamed D03B, could get two powertrain options.

The first is a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine mated to a CVT-type automatic transmission.
The second is the e-Smart series hybrid similar to the one used in the lease-only Perodua Ativa Hybrid, but with a larger 1.5-litre capacity. The Ativa Hybrid’s uses a smaller 1.2-litre unit.
As the codename suggests, the D03B Yaris Cross is being developed by Daihatsu, which could also imply some level of involvement by Perodua under the Toyota-Daihatsu internal company, known as Emerging Market Car Company, or EMCC for short.
To recap, Perodua serves as a regional R&D centre for EMCC, responsible for many compact cars sold in the region, regardless of whether it is sold as a Perodua or not. Speaking of Perodua, we do know that they are working on a B-segment SUV that’s positioned above the Ativa, codenamed D66B.
One such example is the D92A / AC100 Toyota Vios. While the B-segment sedan was developed by Perodua, it will only be sold exclusively as a Toyota; there are no plans to offer the D92A with a Daihatsu or Perodua badge.
