Sell your mothers, sell your wives… do what you have to do to scrounge some money together because it appears as if Hot Wheels and Proton are collaborating on a limited run of diecast models from our national carmaker and they’ve already christened the relationship with the very first diecast of a 1985 Proton Saga.
In a now-deleted post on the Art of Speed Facebook page, the news was shared by them in conjunction with Mattel Malaysia’s 40th anniversary in the country at their factory in Penang today morning.
Undoubtedly, the highlight of the celebration was a red first-generation Proton Saga “bumper besi” diecast model that shared the limelight with the real-life version of the car as well, complete with a life-sized Hot Wheels packaging card for the real thing.
However, the absolutely delectable 1:64 scale of the 1985 Saga isn’t all that she wrote.
Rumour has it that the result of Mattel and Proton getting in bed will birth a Malaysia-exclusive set of 5 Proton cars comprising a Satria GTi, Wira, X70, Exora and the aforementioned 1985 Saga.
For now, there’s no news on how exclusive the run will be or the number of sets produced but rest assured, people will draw blood to get their hands on it.
Further rumours state the price for the set around the RM 250 but of course once resellers get their hands on it, we would be surprised to see it double or even triple in value.
Expect a limited number of units to be available at the likes of 7-11, myNEWS and Toys "R" Us. The rest of it? Well, it’ll likely go through the hands of distributors so you better get on the phone with your favourite Hot Wheels inside man and splash some money on him.
While Malaysians will be vying for this limited run of Proton diecasts, the marque has quite a loyal following in some of the foreign markets it was sold in as well, so expect fans from the UK to be lurking in the shadows to pounce on the models once they’re released.
“Better late than never.” Some despise it, others begrudgingly agree with it but he swears by it… much to the chagrin of everyone around him. That unfortunately stems from all of his project cars not running most of the time, which in turn is testament to his questionable decision-making skills in life. A culmination of many wrongs fortunately making a right; much like his project cars on the rare occasions they run, he’s still trying to figure out if another project car is the way to go.
