The Suzuki Jimny is finally destined for India, as What Car India has received confirmation regarding the model's debut from Maruti Suzuki's sales and marketing boss.
Shashank Srivastava, executive director, sales and marketing, Maruti Suzuki India said, “We are making a marketing plan for the Jimny in India.” Although the exact timeline for the Suzuki Jimny’s launch in India has yet to be determined, the Indian publication mentioned that a launch in 2022 is on the cards.
When the Suzuki Jimny goes on sale in India next year, it will most likely be the soon-to-be-launched 5-door variant. The India-spec Jimny will also be receiving market-specific tweaks.
More interesting is the fact that the 5-door Jimny is expected to be launched alongside the facelifted 3-door model. Both models are said to be powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine. The engine does 102 PS and 130 Nm, mated either to a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, with power deployed to all four wheels.
Srivastava added, "We started manufacturing the Jimny in India for export markets 2-3 months ago. The export numbers for the made-in-India Jimny are quite good. We showcased the Jimny in India at the Auto Expo 2020 for our Indian customers, and we have collected a lot of feedback. We are still doing research on the Jimny's pricing in India, or whether there should be India-specific changes in the car, etc."
Naza Eastern Motors have confirmed that they will be launching the Suzuki Jimny in Malaysia in August. That said, the ongoing situation might delay the Jimny’s Malaysian launch.
For the Malaysian market, Naza stated that the Jimny will be imported from Japan instead. This is because Malaysia does not have a free trade agreement with India. Malaysia does have a free trade agreement with Japan.
