Warning noises are important to ensure the safety of the car’s occupants but they can also be a bit annoying. This is why Nissan is partnering with video games publisher, Bandai Namco to create a more pleasant-sounding experience of warning drivers.

You know that loud beep or ping when you forgot to put on the seatbelts or if the door is not closed properly? Those sounds are a form of communication between the car and its occupant but they can be a bit too sharp and unpleasant to the ears.

Hence, this collaboration with the famed studio behind some of the most popular video games including Pac-Man, the Wangan Midnight arcade series, and Ridge Racer. Bandai Namco was asked to create a higher quality noise that uses pitch, tempo, and tone to get information across while giving them a bit of a personality that suits Nissan.

The team led by Hiroyuki Suzuki, Nissan’s lead engineer for in-car information sound design, and Minamo Takahashi, sound director at Bandai Namco Research Inc spent days in the studio to discuss the right sounds that will be understood easily across the world as well as deemed suitable for the Nissan brand.

Note the special speaker

After the right tones have been selected, the next step is to create variations of the tone based on the urgency and seriousness of the situation. In order to produce a more sonic and layered tone, Nissan’s engineers developed a new speaker that solely makes the alerts.

As a result, you can see from the video that the new alerts are a lot more pleasant to hear than the older ones. You might say that it has a similar vibe to a casual video game.

Nissan’s collaboration with Bandai Namco might sound like an odd pairing but carmakers have collaborated with the performing arts to produce these new warning tones. More recently, Lincoln, Ford’s luxury brand, collaborated with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra to produce warning chimes for a few of their models.
