Usually, Singapore gets plenty of new car models before us Malaysians but in a surprise turn of events, we unofficially got the new AH40 Toyota Vellfire before them. Their long wait has finally ended though as the Borneo Motors (Singapore), the authorised distributor and retailer of Toyota down south, has officially launched the Vellfire Hybrid to go alongside the Alphard that’s already been available launched earlier.

Needless to say, demand for the all-new AH40 Alphard and Vellfire has been through the roof globally. In its native Japan, dealers have been instructed to stop taking orders as the waiting list is around 2 years.

Over in Malaysia, there’s a one year waiting period for both models although it hasn't even been launched yet, only an estimated pricing and order taking. Surprisingly, Toyota Motor is prioritising export markets over its own local Japanese customers when it comes to allocations for the Alphard and Vellfire though that could be because markets like Malaysia and Singapore aren’t exactly volume sellers either.

Although Singapore got the Alphard earlier, the Vellfire Hybrid finally completes the duo there and carries a launch price of S$399,888 (~RM 1,378,000) with COE.

The AH40 generation Toyota Alphard now sells in Malaysia with an estimated price of RM 538,000 for the 2.4-litre turbocharged Alphard and RM 438,000 for the 2.5-litre naturally aspirated Vellfire.

To recap, AH40 Alphard and Vellfire are built on the TNGA-K platform and given that Singapore gets the Vellfire Hybrid, that means the 2.5-litre A25A-FXS four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor that delivers a combined 250 PS 2.5-litre. The electric motor is powered by a nickel-metal hydride battery. Only the front wheels are driven by the CVT gearbox.

Over in Malaysia, there’s no hybrid option. The Malaysia market Toyota Alphard is powered by a T24A-FTS 2.4-litre, inline-4, turbocharged engine with Dual VVT-i. It makes 278 PS and 430 Nm of torque. The transmission of choice is a sole 8-speed automatic.

As for the Vellfire, it’s powered by a 2AR-FE 2.5-litre Dual VVT-i naturally aspirated engine that pumps out 182 PS and 235 Nm of torque to the front wheels via a 7-speed CVT.
