Proton Persona

For just above RM 28k it doesn’t cost much to own a safe, practical and reliable B-Segment family sedan. The Persona was Proton's first model to introduce a 3-point engine mount for improved refinement and the CVT transmission has been progressively recalibrated in 2019 and 2022 to improve drivability and fuel efficiency.

Under the hood is Proton's proven 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder which outputs a healthy 109 PS and 150 Nm paired with a CVT-type automatic ensuring decent performance on the highway, and makes for a superb cruiser in the city as well.

Toyota Vios

Moving up the scale is the Toyota Vios. In particular, the third generation which now stars at just over RM 45k. The Vios is known for its charming looks, superb practicality and of course, a robust powertrain that is also economical at the same time.

The third-generation Vios derived power from two different 1.5-litre engines. The older 109 PS / 141 Nm 1NZ-FE (4-speed auto) and newer 107 PS / 140 Nm 2NR-FE (CVT-auto) from 2016 onwards. The former is known for its punchy performance, whilst the CVT-equipped powertrains deliver better fuel economy. However, in both cases, you’re guaranteed great comfort even for a family of five.

The Perodua Aruz makes this list for its combination of overall value, practical design and accommodating 7-seater interior making it a great choice for larger families. For just over RM 53k, there aren't too many cars that offer as much bang for your buck.

The Aruz is powered by a 102 PS and 133 Nm 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder, mated to a four-speed auto. Whilst it isn't the most powerful 7-seater SUV out there, it makes up for it by being a robust workhorse which is easy to maintain, offering years of peace-of-mind motoring for the whole family.

Honda HR-V

As far as all-rounders go, you can’t do much better than a Honda HR-V. Good looking, beautifully designed inside and out, and that's before we get to the massive boot that will give more expensive SUVs a run for their money. Prices of the early first generations start at just over RM 45k now.

The first-generation Honda HR-V is powered by either the proven 142 PS / 172 Nm 1.8-litre (CVT-auto) or the 152 PS / 190 Nm 1.5-litre i-DCD hybrid (7-speed DCT) which offers even more performance and lower fuel consumption, though these are slightly harder to find.

Mazda CX-5

The second-generation Mazda CX-5 is an SUV that truly proves you can have your cake and eat it too.
