All of them. RS 200 sadly not mine but a lunatic thing I hot to drive. RS2000 mk 2 - fucking ace mate. Pissed all over cars 15 years younger. Completely radged. Had to keep a bag of sand in the boot to make the tyres stick. Mk7 escort convertible - kept it 5 years until it was dead. Hairdressers car but could scare the shit out of people when it wanted and my kids used to like cruising London with the top down Transit - backbone of Britain. The original 1965 teansit changed the world. 70 down a single track road in the country in my mk6 - fine mate. Mine has a king size bed and a kitchen in it but we're being harassed as every terrorist attack is a white van. Model T. Want one someday. Ka (mk1 - fiesta not panda) - my daughter bought one. Tinfoil go cart. Wouldn't want an accident in one but shit it was lunatic to drive. XR3 - brother had one. Tooled like a boss. Mk1 escort Mexico - brother had one as well. Tooled like a boss until he rolled it over. 2.8 granada. Sweeneymobile. Excellent. Capri. Brilliant in a straight line, beautiful, crap at corners. Still want one. And no I dont want a shitty F150. Keep your American crap. Ford UK design brilliant vehicles. I just wish they were better at actually making them.
For the UK certainly hatchbacks and probably when “premium” German cars started to become more of a common site on UK roads. What Defined The 1990's? : Lookers Ford Fiesta Originally launched in 1976, the Fiesta celebrates the big 4-0 this year. Considered a stalwart of the Ford brand, the Fiesta was credited with being one of the most popular cars of the 1990’s. Today its popularity is as enduring as ever and while hurtling toward middle-age, this compact hatchback is now celebrated as being the UK’s best-selling car of all time. It was during the 90’s that the Fiesta underwent its biggest post-launch transformation. From boxy and angular, a new engineering platform and shape ensured it emerged complete with smooth lines making it popular with young drivers. Was the ,Fiesta, your first car? Volkswagen Golf Providing as much enjoyment on screen and they did on road, Volkswagen were as well known for their TV commercials in the 1990’s as they were for their cars. From squeaky earrings to business men and even the Bluebells singing ‘Young at Heart’, the award winning ads drew on influences from pop culture through to timely societal trends. For many the Golf – especially the GTI version - was the epitome of cool. Its versatility meant that it was equally at home functioning as a small family car as it was as a car for young professionals. With reportedly nearly 140,000 still on the roads today, its mantra ‘If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen’ proves itself to be true. Renault Clio Hearing the words ‘Nicole’ and ‘Papa’ in the 90’s could only invoke the image of one thing – a Clio, mais oui. The ads were so popular that in 1996, one survey found the word ‘Nicole’ was recognised by more Britons than the Prime Minister at the time (John Major in case you'd forgotten), actor Bob Hoskins and presenter Chris Evans. Originally introduced in 1990, the ,Clio, has gone onto become one of the consistently best-selling cars of its generation. Voted European Car of the Year twice, in 1991 and then again in 2006, it is credited with restoring Renaults presence and stature after a difficult period of trading in the 1980’s. Its on-screen popularity helped propel it to the overall best-seller list for the 1990’s with demand fuelled in particular by the Williams hot hatch – a favourite with drivers due to its agility and out-right fun factor. BMW 3 Series (E36) With a lifespan of 7 years (1991 – 1998) the 3 Series went on to find itself named annually in Car and Driver Magazine’s ’10 Best Cars List’. Driven by Pierce Brosnan in ‘Goldeneye’ in 1995, the 3 Series has enjoyed its time in the spotlight with appearances in movies such as The Chase, Hangover 2 and Beverley Hills Cop. Last year a 1996 3 Series which had featured in one of the madcap Top Gear challenges (driven by Richard Hammond in Germany) was auctioned off. Probably best to check the suspension with that one….and the steering column…..and the engine…and…well, pretty much everything. Originally available with four and six cylinder engines, rear suspension was the ‘Z-axle’ Multilink suspension, as used in the Z1. With approximately 88,000 on the road today, there is still plenty of scope for more celebrity moments. Mercedes-Benz C-Class Introduced in 1993 as a replacement for the 190 range, the C-Class was the smallest model in the marque's line-up until its sibling, the A-Class, came along in 1997. The first C-Class (W202) sedan was first produced on 1 June 1993 and ceased manufacture in 2000. Almost unrecognisable from today’s sophisticated and sleek C3, nonetheless this German-built classic marked a shift toward greater interior comfort and the inclusion of more standard equipment such as power-steering, a 5 speed-gearbox, and central locking. Indeed, many of the things we take for granted in 2016. Back in the day a brand new 1995 C-Class would have cost just shy of £30,000 – today on the second hand market this could be picked up for a few thousand, with owners describing them as ‘the best of the marque’ and ,‘the best car so far in my life’,. Makes the C-Class sound awfully tempting doesn’t it? And a few more from ,The greatest and most definitive cars of 1990s Britain - Car Keys You couldn’t have this list without mentioning the Mondeo! Ford Mondeo The first Ford Mondeo was introduced in 1992 to replace the ageing Sierra. Originally dubbed the ‘Mundano’ by the press, the Mondeo went on to become a huge success with hundreds of thousands of Mk1 Mondeos sold in the UK. The popularity of the car led to the term ‘Mondeo man’ being coined by Tony Blair in 1996, a label used to encapsulate the sort of everyman voter Blair’s concept of New Labour wanted to target. Blair’s victory in 1997 is cited by many as the moment which kicked off the ‘Cool Britannia’ movement good and proper, securing the original Mondeo’s status as arguably the most 90s car of all. Subaru Impreza Turbo Prior to the release of the Impreza Turbo, for many all you needed to know about Subaru was that the badge read “U R A BUS” in your rear view mirror. But the Japanese brand’s dowdy image was instantly shattered the moment a certain Mr McRae won the 1995 World Rally Championship in ,his Impreza,. Britain went rally mad, to the point that waiting lists for special-edition Imprezas like the P1 stretched back 18 months or more, and the country was flooded with an influx of blue-and-gold turbocharged road weapons. The Impreza Turbo offered limitless grip and sports car-beating performance for a tiny fraction of the cost and has given birth to a whole range of cars that have thrilled enthusiasts and scared pensioners for nearly 30 years. And a final 3 from ,The best cars from the 1990s Porsche 996 - 1997-2004 – from £15,000 A reputation for troublesome engines has driven 996 values down, but there are fixes available; buy smart, and you get a pukka 911 that’s terrific to drive without having to pay the usual premium. And try to remember the last time you saw one of these on the road. See? They’re getting rare now. Toyota Celica Mk7 - 1999-2006 – from £1500 The last of the Celicas still languishes close to banger territory, yet its sharp styling still looks fresh today. Bear in mind, too, that beneath the skin sits the same rev-happy 1.8-litre engine as is fitted to the Mk3 MR2 – not to mention a chassis that’s similarly fleet of foot. Won’t hang around at these prices forever Jaguar XJR - 1994-1997 – from £3800 This was the last manual XJR (codename ‘X306’), and it proved a worthy, supercharged challenger to the BMW M5 and Mercedes E500 super-saloons of the day. The 4.0-litre straight-six was good for 326bhp and the rare five-speed Getrag manual gearboxes have a reputation for reliability. Modern Jaguar owes a lot to this svelte contender.
type 1 and type 2 mean nothing, neither does the ZXI trim level in the UK. a 2008 car here will be around a mk6 or mk7 (i think we are up to mk8 now, i kinda lost count) so at least without pictures, it will be impossible for me to tell you.
Yes. Each and every time I’ve gone car shopping I’ve had a shortlist of a few models, with various pros and cons. Before I actually went to look at the cars, I had a clear idea of which model was the one I wanted, having spent hours on autotrader and reading reviews etc. I therefore did not have to look at others. Most recently, it was an Audi TT (the Mk2). My shortlist was: Audi TT BMW Z4 BMW 1 Series I ruled the 1 Series out due to it not being all that much cheaper than the other two unless you get a low spec engine/trim, and it not being sufficiently sporty looking. Also, they’re super common in my neck of the woods. I ruled the Z4 out on practicality grounds - the boot is tiny and frankly, I wanted a diesel engine (I know, I know, this totally kills any claim to sportscar pedigree). Prior to that it was a Vauxhall Corsa (the Corsa C variant). Here my criteria were very loose. I just wanted a cheap car that wasn’t going to cause me loads of issues. I considered: Vauxhall Corsa Ford Fiesta Renault Clio There were many more examples of Corsas available, and frankly I think that that with regards that generation of cars, the Corsa looked best. The Mk6 Fiesta was very dull and conservative in design (they solved this problem with the Mk7, which was and is a great looking car). There was a third period where I was considering upgrading the TT. Again, I had a shortlist of: Porsche Cayman Porsche Boxster And before I viewed any cars, I had narrowed it down to the Cayman. With all that said, I enjoy car shopping so perhaps I’m not the best example.
If I were in your position the Volkswagen Golf (MK7, 2015- xxxx) would be my choice, but those can be pricey, and more so than the Fiat 500 you mentioned. If the Golf is eliminated, I would either look to a Honda Fit or Ford Fiesta. The Fit is well regarded by most auto reviewers, and the Fiesta is not a bad choice either, and will cost less to buy. In any case, I would go for a used/CPO model (2 years old or less, under 30k miles) to get the best bang for your buck, and you might even be able to afford the 500 or Golf that way.
If you want a go-cart on steroids get the FIAT 500 Abarth Ford Fiesta ST An upgrade on the Arbath: In the US the Ford Fiesta ST is 4dr - I personally think all hot watches should be 2 door. Ford Focus ST: This is a hatchback in #beastmode - of course you want this of the 3 cars, if money is not a variable. Other cars to seriously consider buying: The All Rounder: Golf GTI MK7, Golf R (the big brother’s hot hatch) The Devil: 2018 Mercedes Benz GLA 45 The Contender and Hot Import: Honda Civic Type R I’ll leave out the Renault, Seat and Citroen hot hatches - since I’m looking at the US market. The Favourite: Mini Cooper S, JCW, and the JCW GP (if you can find one) The Surprise: Tesla Model 3 - I don't know if it should belong here, but this is something the rest have to look out for! The Future: Do you think we’ll see a hot hatch from #Porsche? Just the thought of it is exciting P.S: I’m eager to see what you guys think of this list. Fell free to edit and update the post. #hothatches are the best!
