In Australia, prices for the 2022 Toyota GR86 have been announced, starting from AUD 43,240. Compared to its predecessor, the Toyota GT86, the GR86 is AUD 11,060 or about 30 percent more expensive than before.

Its twin, the 2022 Subaru BRZ is priced at AUD 40,290, which is AUD 2,950 (around 7 percent) cheaper than the 2022 Toyota GR86.

Meanwhile in Malaysia, the 2022 Subaru BRZ has a starting price of RM 249,245. If we were to factor in the same 7 percent price difference as seen in Australia, the 2022 Toyota GR86 would be priced at around RM 266,000.

However, the Toyota 86 facelift was last priced at RM 257,502 back in 2017, and if we were to assume a similar price hike of around 30 percent, the 2022 Toyota GR86 could be priced at around RM 334,000.

Having said that, this is a rudimentary method of calculation and estimation, because we haven’t considered Malaysia’s tax structure that is based on engine capacity.

Compared to its predecessor with a 2.0-litre engine, the 2022 Toyota GR86 with the larger 2.4-litre engine will fall into the tax bracket with a 10 percent higher excise duty.

Historically, the Toyota 86 is priced higher than Subaru BRZ in Malaysia – though with some differences in equipment level – so it’s reasonable to assume that the Toyota GR86 will be more expensive than its Subaru counterpart.

Could the Toyota GR86 really be priced more than RM 300k when it arrives? Hopefully not, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it is.

Just a recap, the second-generation Toyobaru twins have a 2.4-litre boxer engine that makes 235 PS/250 Nm (based on Japanese specifications), mated to a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, going to the rear wheels.
