Toyota has officially launched the Toyota C-HR 2.0L plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model in Europe, the latest and most powerful of a trio of electrified powertrains for the sporty compact crossover model.

The 2.0-litre plug-in (PHEV) model now joins the (140 PS)1.8-litre and (197 PS) 2.0-litre hybrid variants that were first launched in selected markets starting last year.

The C-HR PHEV features Toyota’s fifth-generation Toyota hybrid technology which has undergone significant improvements (over the 4th-gen powertrain), including redesigned key components to reduce size and weight. These enhancements, such as a new transaxle and power control unit (PCU), along with a more powerful high-voltage battery, result in an improved balance of performance and fuel efficiency.

As for the C-HR PHEV, it features a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder Dynamic Force 4-cylinder engine producing 152 PS, which is aided by a 163 PS electric motor to develop a combined maximum of 223 PS.

Powered by a 13.6kWh lithium ion battery, the C-HR PHEV can deliver an electric driving range of up to 65 km yet achieve a brisk 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.4 seconds.

The Toyota C-HR Plug-in is equipped with a 6.6kW onboard charger, which allows the battery to be recharged from 0 – 100 percent in less than 2.5 hours.

Notably, the C-HR’s PHEV powertrain is identical to the Toyota Prius PHEV which is also sold in European markets.

The C-HR PHEV has also been tuned to suit UK and European driving styles. For example, the accelerator pedal input sensitivity has been recalibrated for easy control and rapid response. 

In a first for any Toyota vehicle worldwide, the Toyota C-HR Plug-in features ZF frequency sensitive control (FSC) suspension to enhance handling and ride comfort. The hydro-mechanical system increases damping force at low frequencies to gain superior body control, in roll and pitch, and during cornering. At high frequencies, damping is reduced to improve ride comfort.

Other upgrades of the C-HR PHEV also include a 17-inch brake setup for better stopping distances. 

The C-HR PHEV will be made available in several trim levels including the snazzy GR-Sport trim level. Customer deliveries in the UK are slated to begin in July 2024.

Closer to home, the all-new 2023 Toyota C-HR is unlikely to make its way to our region, Singapore aside. The first-generation C-HR wasn't a strong seller in Malaysia, and UMW Toyota Motor stopped selling it here in 2020 to make way for the Toyota Corolla Cross, which is priced between RM 130,900 and RM 143,000.
