Proton’s sales grew 40.9 percent in May 2023, rising in tandem with recovery of Total Industry Volume (total new car sales in the country), which Proton estimates to be 32.2 percent up, reaching 61,600 units.

Including a small number of exports, Proton sold 13,268 units in May 2023. Cumulative sales for the first five months of 2023 now stand at 62,790 units (including exports), up 38.9 percent. Proton’s market share now stands at 20.9 percent.

May also saw deliveries of the Proton X90 commencing, with 257 units sold but this is from just 3 weeks of sales as the X90 was only launched on 7-May 2023. June will be the first full month of sales for Proton’s first 6-/7-seater SUV.

“May was memorable for Proton not just in terms of sales achievement but also because we launched the Proton X90 and celebrated our 40th anniversary in the same month. We are humbled by the numbers posted and a 40% increase in sales is a just reward for our efforts, but there are still seven months left in 2023 and the company is hungry for more.

“As for the performance of our newest model, demand for the Proton X90 have been strong as customers take advantage of our early bird package that offered accessories, a Proton X-Watch, a data package with 4GB free for five years and enhanced insurance benefits. The company will also have more new product launches and introduce updates to our existing range while making our debut in the EV market via our subsidiary, Pro-Net so there are a lot of activities on the horizon for the rest of 2023,” said Roslan Abdullah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Proton.
