National pride runs deep when we see Protons and Peroduas around the world 01

Remember the story about a bunch of Malaysian students in Scotland going apeshit when they came across a first gen Perodua Myvi in the city of Edinburgh where they were studying?

Nonetheless, it’s safe to say we’re all struck with a little sense of national pride whenever we’ve come across a Proton or Perodua on those times we were lucky enough to travel overseas.

You remember what that is right? Travelling overseas? Life prior to 2019 BC (before corona).

Someone in the office came across an Instagram account creatively named Malaysia Cars Overseas that’s pretty much self-explanatory in what it documents; Malaysian cars spotted overseas.

It’s a pretty comprehensive account and goes to show that our Protons and Peroduas were sold to every corner of the planet with many of them being older models are still very much running.

Here we’ve picked 20 of these global Protons and Peroduas from the Malaysia Cars Overseas acccount that caught our attention:

  1. An honest-looking first generation 2007 Perodua Myvi 1.3 SXi Xtra RHD in Yorkshire, England. Despite the underinflated front tyre, it appears to still be running.

  1. A tastefully modified 2011 Proton Satria Neo 1.6 RHD in Jakarta, Indonesia. Apart from the yellow-tinted lights, it has a custom air-intake integrated into the bonnet and is running on a set of timeless black Advan SA3 wheels.

  1. In case you didn’t know, the Proton Wira Aeroback was sold in Chile as well under the Proton Natura name. Here’s a 1997 Proton Natura 1.6 GLXi LHD from Islam De Maipo, Santiago, Chile. This one looks to be running some minimal mods.

  1. It might not have sold in large numbers but its utilitarian nature meant the Proton Arena is one of the best Proton models at holding its resale value. Naturally, being a ute it was hugely popular in Australia as well, sold there as the Proton Jumbuck. Here’s a Jumbuck 1.5 GLi RHD hailing from Adelaide, Australia.

  1. One of the more desirable Protons here, the Putra was also sold in Russia as the Proton 218 Coupé 1.8 GLXi LHD. This one’s from the Republic Of Bashkortostan, Russia.

  1. Every boy racers favourite Proton, the Proton Satria GTi 1.8 gave contemporary hot hatches a run for their money overseas; as did this example spotted in Sydney, Australia.

  1. Here we have a 2014-2018 Perodua Alza 1.5 Advanced Version RHD hailing from New Delhi, India and utilised a police car. Not sure how it’ll fare in a car chase but at least they can haul more baddies to the lock-up.

  1. This one caught us by surprise as well but according to the caption, it’s a modified Perodua Kancil / Daihatsu Ceria EZi850 Estate from Bogor, Indonesia.

  1. Although the Proton Satria Cabriolet in Malaysia never went past the concept stage, this 2000 Proton 300-series/Satria Bicolor LHD in Frankfurt, Germany with a soft top sunroof is consolation enough.

  1. Could this list be complete without a Saga? This 2011 Proton Saga FLX 1.3 Executiveis a clean example spotted in Bangkok, Thailand

  1. We’ve covered the new Saga but there’s nothing like the original. This 1992 Proton Saga Saloon 1.5 SE (Special Edition) hailing from Hereford, UK still rides on the original wheel covers.

  1. The Perodua Kelisa seems to not depreciate at all. This 2005 Perodua Kelisa 1.0 EX was spotted looking for a new home at a used car dealer in Yorkshire, UK.

  1. The King of Malaysian Roads is probably putting the fear of god into the hearts of the unassuming people Surrey, UK in the form of this fiery red 2010 Perodua Myvi 1.3 EZi.

  1. Over in England, the Proton Putra lived under the guise of the Proton Persona Coupé. This clean example from Hyde, England could use some air in the front tyre but otherwise looks to be in decent shape.

  1. The 2001 Perodua Kembara is slowly gaining a reputation as an affordable platform to get into off-roading. At first glance, this one spotted in Krasnodar Krai, Russia looks to be revelling in that off the beaten path life since day one but in reality, it's most likely a Daihatsu Terios with a Perodua badge. We'll close one eye though.

  1. While the whole Itasha scene is an acquired taste, it’s nice to see a Proton Satria Neo repping the colours in the motherland of Itasha in Japan.

  1. We might have the Saga Cup here as a means of affordable door-to-door racing for Malaysians but this wrecked 1991 Proton Saga Saloon MPi 1.3 GLS gave its life for a different genre of motorsports; a demolition derby in East Sussex, UK. RIP.

  1. This might be a little cheat and some of you’ll would’ve already noticed it but this 1989 Proton Saga Saloon 1.3 RHD made a cameo in the James Bond movie “Tomorrow Never Dies” alongside one of the most recognisable Bond cars. The scene was shot in a car park in England. You can catch the Saga in the clip below at the 3:28 minute mark.

“Better late than never.” Some despise it, others begrudgingly agree with it but he swears by it… much to the chagrin of everyone around him. That unfortunately stems from all of his project cars not running most of the time, which in turn is testament to his questionable decision-making skills in life. A culmination of many wrongs fortunately making a right; much like his project cars on the rare occasions they run, he’s still trying to figure out if another project car is the way to go.
