The stream of bad news just keeps coming. After Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, and Kia, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia has also announced price hikes for the most important model in its line-up, the 7-seater Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace. The locally assembled (CKD) Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is now more expensive by between RM 14k to RM 31k, depending on variant. Chery is in talks with its local partners to establish a local assembly (CKD) operation in Malaysia, said the company in its latest announcement today. “Chery remains highly committed to Malaysia – it is currently working closely with local partners towards establishing assembly operations in the country,” the company said in its press statement. Two weeks after the Toyota Corolla Cross was launched in Japan, the company has received more than 13,500 bookings for the new SUV. Out of that figure, 90% of the bookings were for hybrid variants. Like for like, the difference between a B-segment 2020 Proton X50 and a C-segment 2020 Proton X70, even when compared against similarly equipped variants, is just around RM 10k. Put aside for a moment semantics that both the X50 and X70 are from different segments. At the end of the day, both cars do more or less the same thing, have five seats, are similarly equipped, and are priced almost the same – the latter is what matter most to consumers. We’ve seen plenty of spy shots of the highly anticipated 2020 Proton X50 but most of the photos were taken of the car’s rear-end. We've even spied the car right next to the Proton X70 as well. Here’s another spotting of the X50 but with the clearest front-end photo ever. From the photo, we can see that the X50’s daytime running lights (DRL) will be different from the bigger Proton X70’s shape. Instead of a stop inverted L, the X50’s lights will surround the bottom part of the headlights instead.
