Do you know what’s a blind spot? Let me paint a scenario: you’ve just exited the Seremban highway and you’re about to merge into the MEX highway.

You’re caught behind a slower car and you would like to make an overtake, you checked your right wing mirror, coast is clear and you decided to make a lane change.

Only to be met by an angry blaring honk from a car in the right lane and the glare of the driver who had to avoid crashing into you by escaping onto the right most lane.

The reason you didn’t see the car in the middle lane next to you is because the car was inconveniently cruising in your blind-spot area.

Blind-spots are areas around the side of a car that cannot be seen by a driver from the driver’s seat even from both rear and side mirrors.

To be specifically (by here I mean painfully) accurate, it's the area behind your wing mirrors and next to both your front and rear doors on both sides of the car.

These are spots where you are required to physically crane your neck around to check if there is a car there.

All cars have such blind spots, even the tiny Perodua Axia.

In driving school, we were thought to always make a glance over your shoulders to check your surroundings and not rely on your mirrors alone.

Another way to keep safe is to know the blind spot areas of your fellow motorists, especially large vehicles, so you know to avoid driving in that area.

Throughout the years car manufacturers have worked to solve blind-spot crashes by inventing devices to assist in informing drivers of objects out of their vision.

Blind spot monitor radars are costly gadgets to install on a car. That is why for the longest time only luxury cars have the system installed.

Manufacturers like Honda instead came up with an alternative system known as the Honda LaneWatch like you can get on the Honda Accord and the incoming Civic.

Luckily for us, as the years wear on, installation of the radars became more affordable.

Toyota was the first to jump on the wagon by installing these radars on the newly introduced Vios and Yaris.
