Following its line-off ceremony, the Indonesia-made Toyota Yaris Cross will now commence exports to other markets.

Produced at PT. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia's (TMMIN) Karawang plant in West Java, the Yaris Cross now becomes the second hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) after the Innova Zenix to be produced in Karawang for domestic and export markets.

TMMIN President Director Warih Andang Tjahjono said, “The Indonesian-made Yaris Cross, with an 80 percent local content ratio, for both the hybrid and petrol (ICE) versions are also exported to countries in Asia and Latin America and will contribute to Indonesia’s economic growth.”

In the case of the Yaris Cross, the battery is assembled at Toyota Karawang Plant 2 Battery Line, while the engine is produced at Toyota Karawang Plant 3. A total of IDR 2.5 trillion (RM 777 million) has been invested by TMMIN for the production of the Yaris Cross.

TMMIN External Relations Director Bob Azam added, "For the Yaris Cross, a total of 116 suppliers are involved in our production process, resulting to achieve a local content ratio of 80 percent. Although we faced many challenges to get to this stage, we firmly believe that the development and strengthening of Indonesia’s automotive industry could increase Indonesia’s potential and positioning in the global electrification vehicle eco-system,”

Toyota Indonesia expects to export more than 22,000 units of hybrid and petrol versions of the Yaris Cross in 2023 for countries in Asia and Latin America. Toyota Indonesia is planning to expand the Yaris Cross export continuously, and by 2025 Toyota Indonesia is planning to ship 40,000 units of both versions to a range of markets.

Moving forward, Toyota Indonesia has also set a target to increase the export volume of Toyota brand vehicles by 5 percent at 316,000 units at the end of 2023. This year, Toyota Indonesia will also expand export destination countries, in particular to the growing African region.

Details are yet scarce regarding the launch of the Toyota Yaris Cross locally.

However, it has been long rumoured, that the DNGA-based Yaris Cross will underpin the upcoming D66B SUV model from Perodua, which could also be the first hybrid model to be officially launched by Perodua in Malaysia.
