Proton has surpassed the 100,000 unit sales mark for a fifth consecutive year by surging past the threshold in August, a month earlier than doing so in 2022.

With 13,955 units (domestic + export) delivered in August, total sales stand at 104,602 units for the first eight months of 2023, 17,121 units (up 19.6 percent) more than the in same period in 2022.

With total industry volume (TIV) for the month estimated to be at 74,200 units, Proton’s market share is projected to be at 18.8 percent for August, with a YTD market share figure of 20.8 percent.

Proton estimates overall volume growth estimated to reach 12.2 percent in 2023. Thus, we could see approximately 158,000 unit sales by the end of the year.

The Proton Saga remains the bestseller achieving its highest monthly figure of 2023 with 6,585 units, making it the second best-selling car in Malaysia. A total of 45,836 units of the Saga have been sold this year; an increase of 34.2 percent over the same period in 2022.

The Proton X50 also continues to head the B-segment SUV market with 2,558 units last month contributing to a YTD figure of 22,750 units also making it the bestselling SUV in Malaysia. The larger X70 on the other hand, recorded sales of 1,002 units in August, pushing cumulative sales to 7,999 units for 2023.

The latest addition to the range, the Proton X90 racked up sales of 719 units in August and a cumulative total of 2,944 units after just three full months of sales under its belt.

Elsewhere the Persona, Iriz and outgoing Exora garnered sales of 2,028 units, 654 units and 409 units respectively. The Proton Persona achieved sales of more than 2,000 units for the sixth time in 2023, a YTD figure of 16,561 units is 72 percent more than in 2022, placing it as the bestselling B-Segment sedan in 2023.

Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Proton Edar added, "Malaysia’s automotive industry is on a trajectory to reset the record books again in 2023 as Proton and other brands continue to compete for sales. The buoyant mood of buyers is reflected in the high number of new products introduced, and with many more models making their debut before the end of December, we expect market conditions to remain highly competitive."
