• Proton X50 spotted in India
• It will face a lot of rivals
• Launching later this year?

India could be Proton’s next export destination, as a recent spyshot of the Proton X50 has surfaced, courtesy of rahul_auto_spy on Instagram.

From the blurry photos, it certainly looks like Proton is testing the range-topping Flagship variant of the X50 in India, as evident from its 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels and black roof – both of which are exclusive to the range-topping variant.

The Proton X50 1.5 Flagship is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that does 177 PS and 255 Nm. Power is delivered to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

If and when the Proton X50 goes on sale in India, it will have to square up against a number of rivals, including the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta.

Back in 2008, Proton announced plans to enter India with the Proton Savvy, Proton Saga, and Proton Persona. However, those plans were eventually shelved as Proton could not find a suitable partner for local assembly in India.

More recently, although Proton nor Geely have yet to reveal any plans to enter India, but Proton is currently present in countries surrounding India, including Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. A market launch in India could be on the cards.
