Indonesia’s de facto national car, the Toyota Innova has been crowned the country’s best-selling car of 2023 with 66,459 units sold according to Gaikindo’s sales report. This is followed by the Toyota Avanza (62,275 units) and the Honda Brio (62,008 units).
There is a disclaimer for the Innova’s sales figures though as it combined the numbers of both the outgoing rear-wheel drive (RWD) Innova which is only available with a diesel powerplant, and its front-wheel drive (FWD) successor.
The FWD Innova Zenix alone contributed 43,737 units while the RWD Innova took up the remaining 22,722 units.
Still, the most popular variants of the Innova Zenix are the more expensive hybrid variants. Based on the sales data, 27,705 units or around 63% of customers went for the hybrid variants and the most popular is the top-of-the-range Q variant with TSS and Modellista kit.
Prices for the Innova Zenix Hybrid range from IDR 471.6 million to IDR 627.6 million (~RM 142k-190k) with the higher variants priced closer to the Japan-imported (CBU) Voxy that starts from IDR 607.8 million (~RM 184k).
Only 2,749 units of the Voxy were sold in Indonesia throughout 2023 but since the Innova or Kijang Innova as it is referred to in the archipelago has a more respectable name, many are willing to fork out more rupiah for their pride and joy.
Meanwhile in Malaysia, the older Innova is still being sold here and is locally assembled (CKD) in Shah Alam. On the other hand, the Innova Zenix is fully imported from Indonesia and is only available with one petrol and one petrol-hybrid variant, both 2.0-litre displacements.
