Electrified cars in Indonesia are not that quite in demand but data has shown that sales are increasing though hybrid vehicles are a more favourable choice over electric vehicles (EVs) among buyers.
Just like Malaysia, Indonesia’s EV infrastructure is more concentrated in urban areas so individual EV model sales rarely breach 1,000 units a month. According to Gaikindo, Indonesia’s best-selling EV in May is the Ioniq 5 which saw 918 units sold and is followed by the Wuling Air with 455 units sold.

The two EVs are the only models to have recorded 3-figure sales in May with the third-placing BMW iX selling only 60 units that month while the Toyota bZ4X moved 47 units. Part of the reason why the Ioniq 5 and Wuling Air sold plenty of units is because both EVs are assembled locally (CKD) in Indonesia which allowed them to receive tax rebates.

Meanwhile, the Toyota Innova Zenix Hybrid is Indonesia’s best-selling hybrid vehicle in May 2023. With 1,736 units being sold, it is also the best-selling electrified vehicle of the month. This was followed by the Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid which sold 626 units and the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid which saw 149 units sold in the same period.

Speaking of Toyota, it is the most favoured hybrid brand in the archipelago with half of the models listed in the Gaikindo sales data bearing the ellipses. Including Lexus, Toyota basically offers the most number of hybrid models in Indonesia with a total of 7. Soon, that number would be 8 following the launch of the Yaris Cross Hybrid.

Aside from Suzuki, the other two non-Toyota hybrid models sold in May are the Nissan Kicks e-Power and the Wuling Almaz RS Hybrid. Honda doesn’t offer a hybrid line-up in Indonesia while both Ora and BYD are never sold in the country.
