VW's legendary Zwickau plant to only produce electric vehicles 01

The last model produced with a combustion engine had left Volkswagen's iconic Zwickau plant on 26th June 2020. The seventh-generation Golf R Estate with a 2.0-litre petrol engine in Oryx White Pearl Effect was produced for a customer in Germany. After that, only electric models of Volkswagen as well as sister brands, Audi and Seat will be produced in Zwickau.

Since 1904, cars have been built in Zwickau beginning with the Horsch, but the plant had been infamous for producing the Trabant when Germany was divided into East and West. Since Volkswagen took over the plant in May 1990, exactly 6,049,207 Volkswagen models including the Polo, Golf, Golf Estate, Passat Saloon and Passat Variant have been produced in Zwickau.

VW's upcoming ID.4 electric car

The ID.4 and a future Audi SUV model will be produced in Zwickau at the end of the year. Production of Volkswagen's first electric car, the ID.3 1st Edition had already started production at the same plant in November 2019.

Volkswagen is switching a large car factory completely to electric mobility for the first time at the cost of around 1.2 billion euros. During the final expansion stage from 2021, six MEB models will be built for three VW Group brands in Zwickau. All 8,000 employees will be prepared for production of electric cars and for handling high-voltage systems as part of various training measures.
