Malaysians might not be familiar with the Toyota Voxy/Noah nameplate, but the model rather popular in Japan. You can think of the Toyota Voxy as a more compact version of the Toyota Alphard.

The third-generation Voxy, codenamed ZRR80, is available as either a 7- or 8-seater. In the markets where the Voxy is sold (such as Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Japan), it competes directly with similarly sized rivals like the Nissan Serena and Honda StepWGN.

Overview

Similar to the Alphard and Vellfire duo, the Voxy is sold under several names, including the Esquire and Noah. These variants are mechanically identical to the Voxy, with the main difference being their exterior designs.

In Japan, the Voxy comes with two powertrain options. The first is a naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre 3ZR-FE petrol engine producing 152 PS and 193 Nm of torque. The second option is a petrol-electric hybrid that combines a 1.8-litre 2ZR-FXE engine with an electric motor, delivering a total system output of 136 PS.

Reconditioned units imported into Malaysia are typically equipped with the 2.0-litre petrol engine, as the hybrid variants are not imported.

Much like the Alphard and Vellfire, the Voxy and its sibling models can be extensively customised and optioned directly from the dealer in Japan, which means it’s unlikely that two Voxy units are exactly alike.

Conclusion

It's unfortunate that boxy, spacious, and practical MPVs with sliding doors aren't as popular in Malaysia as they are in Japan. Nissan remains only one that offers such an option in the segment with the Serena. But if you prefer to stand out, the Voxy is the perfect alternative.
