The current rear-wheel drive Toyota Innova could soon make way for a new front-wheel model as Toyota tries to improve its fuel consumption, mirroring a similar arrangement with the Toyota Avanza / Veloz.
Yes, the long-standing rear-wheel drive layout could bow out, likely replaced by Toyota’s TNGA platform, transforming it into a front-wheel drive MPV. With the new TNGA platform in place, the next gen Innova should offer a more comfortable ride than before.
Front-wheel drive layout aside, according to sources familiar with the matter, the next-gen Innova will be receiving a petrol-electric 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain.
Recall that the current Toyota Innova and its IMV platform wasn’t developed with electrification in mind, and thus is only offered with a range of petrol and turbodiesel engines. Power for all variants of the current-generation Innova are transferred to the rear wheels.
The current AN140 Toyota Innova was launched bac in 2015. Factoring in a typical 8-year model lifecycle, we can expect the next-generation model to arrive in 2023.
