As one of the fastest-growing emerging markets in Southeast Asia, the monthly ranking of the best-selling cars in Vietnam is one of the most diverse in the region. Though motorcycles still dominate the roads, cars are starting to become more accessible to the country’s growing middle class.
VAMA, Vietnam’s equivalent of the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has released sales figures for the first half of 2023 (H1 2023) and standing at the top spot is the Mitsubishi Xpander which saw 7,982 units sold.
Taking the number two spot in the year so far is the Ford Ranger with 7,600 units sold. Vietnam is one of a few countries around the world where the best-selling pick-up truck is not the Toyota Hilux. According to sales data, the Ranger took more than 80% market share, clearly a default choice among Vietnamese.

In fact, the Hilux is the third worst-selling car in Vietnam in H1 2023 with only 62 units sold. Only the Suzuki Ciaz (14 units) and Honda Accord (26 units) performed worse according to data compiled by our colleagues at AutoFun VN.
Part of the reason for the Hilux's poor sales figures though is due to the pick-up truck being discontinued in Vietnam because of poor diesel fuel quality. Most fuel stations especially outside of cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City do not offer Euro 5 standard diesel.
Rounding up the top 5 best-selling cars in Vietnam in H1 2023 are the Hyundai Accent with 7,452 units, Toyota Corolla Cross with 6,341 vehicles, and the Toyota Vios with 5,425 units. The Vios which was Vietnam’s best-selling car in 2020 was also the country’s most popular car in June.

Unlike the ones sold in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand (as the Yaris Ativ), the Vietnamese-spec Vios is the last-generation model and received a somewhat questionable redesign similar to the updated Yaris that was launched in Thailand.
