The mega makeshift building in Technology Park Malaysia (just behind Wisma Standard Chartered) tells a story of the scale of UMW Toyota Motor's Beyond Zeroevent, an all under-one-roof symposium of Toyota's multi-pathway sustainable mobility strategy and the products it entails.
Happening from now all the way to 28-February 2024, the event houses displays and unique demonstrations with something for everyone. Here's 5 of the coolest things you can see (and do!) there this week:
1. Get up close to the 2024 Toyota Prius in Malaysia
And not just any stock Prius either - the ΓΌber-special Prius 24h Le Mans Centennial Edition. It's Toyota's way to celebrate the 100th year running of the world's most famous endurance race.
Lots of this Prius takes over its GR010 Le Mans-winning sibling. There's the track-focused exterior, a whole bunch of carbon fibre parts, special livery, and one-off Rays wheels.
Inside there's Alcantara upholstery (not available in the regular Prius) and a pair of bucket seats, to complete the look.
Toyota has remained mum about what's under the hood β or rather what's been fettled with β under the hood, though it's base is the 2.0-litre all-wheel drive variant. With a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated engine and two electric motors, combined system output is 199 PS in stock form, though we suspect this race-inspired one might have a few extra ponies under all that carbon fibre...
2. Lexus RZ debuts in Malaysia
Hiding in plain sight is the Lexus RZ 450e, nestled between the Toyota Hilux BEV concept and the Toyota bZ4X. It's the sole Lexus you'll find within the entire pavillion, and fittingly plans for a local launch are already underway.
Preliminary details reveal that the RZ 450e is equipped with a 71.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, offering a range of up to 440 km. AC charging goes up to 11 kW, while DC charging is rated at 150 kW.
With a peak powertrain output of 313 PS, courtesy of a 204 PS/266 Nm motor at the front and a 109 PS/169 Nm motor at the rear, the Lexus RZ 450e accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 160 km/h.
3. Experience the Sora FCEV bus
Not only does Beyond Zero have a bunch of recent Toyota concepts to view alongside some production vehicles not available in our region, visitors also have the opportunity to experience them.
Starting things off is the chance to ride along in the Toyota Sora FCEV bus, in its inaugural appearance in our country. Using a zero-emissions hydrogen powertrain with 2 electric motors (154 PS/335 Nm each), the only by-product of this vehicle is water.
4. Test drive concept cars
Besides that, the test drives also allow for one to experience the full breadth of Toyota's diverse powertrain options β there's the Camry Hybrid, Hilux FCEV concept, and the battery-electric bZ4X to drive, besides a ride along in a Toyota light duty FCEV truck.
Note however that test drive allocation is by slots, so signing up via this link prior to attending the event is encouraged.
5. Check out the Toyota Mirai and hydrogen tech up close
Among the dozens of vehicles on display is the Toyota Mirai, the brand's first-ever mass-produced hydrogen FCEV vehicle.
With hydrogen gaining traction in Malaysia in recent times β Sarawak has taken the lead in having hydrogen fueling stations, and using the Mirai as official cars β it offers a rare opportunity for visitors to see one up close and personal.
Techies interested in the technology itself can see a cutaway of a FCEV engine within the halls, and outside there's also a live demonstration of how hydrogen is stored, transported, and used: Air Products and Hydrexia have a working setup of a hydrogen fuel pump, which also refuels the FCEV cars throughout the week. Fun fact - a part of the symposium uses power generated by hydrogen!
UMW Toyota's Beyond Zero event goes from now all the way to 28-February 2024, from 9 am to 6 pm daily.
