Toyota had just introduced the 2024 Toyota Hilux equipped with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which took centre stage of the announcement. Another new feature worth highlighting is the Multi-terrain Select system.
According to Toyota, the Multi-Terrain Select system - a first for the Hilux - offers drivers the flexibility to customize vehicle stability control settings based on specific driving conditions.

The system includes an automatic setting that adapts to varied terrains and a manual mode with five pre-set options: Dirt, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow, or Rock. Each pre-set is carefully calibrated to optimize power distribution and minimize wheelspin, enhancing traction and manoeuvrability.
This feature puts the 2024 Toyota Hilux on par with rivals like the Ford Ranger and the recently unveiled 2024 Mitsubishi Triton. The Ranger, particularly in higher-tier variants such as the Wildtrak and Raptor, offers selectable drive modes for different terrains, while the Triton comes with the Super Select 4WD-II and seven drive modes.
While Toyota has confirmed the Hilux Hybrid 48V's arrival in European markets by mid-2024, there is still no indication on its availability in Malaysia. The demand for powertrain electrification among local pickup truck buyers in Malaysia appears limited, and the unique tax structure for pickup trucks adds further complexity.
Pickup trucks in Malaysia, regardless of registration types, face zero excise tax as commercial vehicles. Import duties for Thailand-sourced pickups are waived under the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement.
This ultimately means that it is not possible to reduce taxes any further, and the electrification will likely drive prices of the Hilux upwards. If we were to speculate, we'd say that chances of its introduction in Malaysia are slim.
