2018 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Hatch vs Sedan

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class has always been known to us as a hatchback. Indeed, the A45 AMG still holds the reputation of being the most powerful hot-hatch in its class, but Mercedes-Benz decided to mesh things up and unleashed a sedan version as well. What’s different other than its looks?

The answer is: not much.

Launched into the Malaysian market just six months after the hatch, the A-Class sedan, or rather the A-Class Limousine as Mercedes-Benz knows it, is really the beloved hatchback but with a sexier behind.

Measuring in at 4,549 mm in length, the A-Class sedan offers up more boot space at 420 litres compared to the hatch’s 370 litres. This is a given as the hatchback has a length of 4,419 mm.

The sedan also stands a little taller than the hatchback at 1,446 mm compared to 1,440 mm. It might not seem a lot, but taller adults would appreciate the taller height.

Of course, having more body to carry around, the sedan also has a heavier kerb weight at 1,465 kg while the hatch measures in at 1,455 kg.

Both A-Class hatchback and sedan have a multitude of ambient lighting for the pickiest owners

In Malaysia, both A250 cars come in the AMG Line, which means even the wheels are similar 18-inch AMG 5 spoke wheels.

Underneath it all, both hatch and sedan are powered by a similar 2.0-litre turbocharged unit with similar outputs of 227 PS and 350 Nm. It even shares the same 7G dual clutch automatic transmission.

Both A250 hatch and sedan shares the same 2.0-litre turbocharge heart

But both cars don’t share similar 0-100 km/h times with the hatch just 0.1 seconds faster than the sedan’s numbers. That’s a lot in racing terms but not noticeable unless you’re a determined dragster (please conduct any drag racing at a circuit).

Other than that, the hatch and sedan also defer in terms of fuel consumption. The hatch is rated in higher at 6.6-litre/ 100 km compared to the sedan’s 6.3-litre/ 100 km.

Of course, another point of difference is the price between the two cars.

  • Mercedes-Benz A250 hatchback - RM 263,888
  • Mercedes-Benz A200 hatchback - RM 227,888
  • Mercedes-Benz A250 sedan - RM 267,888
  • Mercedes-Benz A200 sedan - RM 229,888

Admittedly, the differences between the A-Class hatchback and sedan are really not that much.

2018 Mercedes-Benz MBUX

Both A-Class hatch and sedan comes with the full suite of MBUX

Both cars are equipped with the same features under the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive system umbrella and also comes with Active Brake Assist (Mercedes’ version of AEB) and Active Parking Assist. Of course, this also means that there is no Adaptive Cruise Control on both cars.

The full suite of Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) is similar to each other so is the 10.25-inch touchscreen, the new touch pad and even the wide array of cabin ambient lighting choices.

In fact, both cars carry more differences with their A200 siblings than with each other, like the Multi-link suspensions on the A250 hatch and sedan over the rear torsion beams on the A200.
