Sibling rivalry: Is the 2020 Mazda BT-50 better looking than the Isuzu D-Max?

Mazda recently introduced the all-new 2020 Mazda BT-50 to the world. As you know, the new BT-50 is now based on the reputable 2020 Isuzu D-Max, just like how the out-going truck was based on the Ford Ranger.
Off the bat, it isn’t easy to spot the difference in terms of design between the two trucks. Only when one looked closer do you see the differences.
The largest difference is, of course, the front-end of the truck. Instead of the Isuzu D-Max’s rugged new grille and DRLs that gives the car a lazy glare, Mazda has swapped in a more sophisticated look inspired by the Kodo design spirit.
So, the BT-50 will sport a grille similar to the 7-seater Mazda CX-9 SUV right down to the squinty headlights and samurai-like DRLs.
From the side, rather than the D-Max’s sharp shoulder lines, Mazda has created a smoother silhouette with lines that flow into the next for the BT-50.
Unlike the previous generation where Mazda entirely redesigned the tail lights for a more distinguishable (and not so practical) look, Mazda didn’t seem to have done many changes for the rear-end of the truck.
Other than the plain full red taillights, the BT-50’s rear-end shares many similarities with the D-Max, right down to the design of the lines.
On the inside, Mazda has endeavoured to keep things classy. Though the panels, air-conditioner controls and even the touchscreen are the same, Mazda has swapped in a smooth leather-clad dashboard to replace the one in the D-Max.
The BT-50 also sports larger air-conditioner vents. The steering wheel and digital instrument panel remain the same as the D-Max, the only thing that Mazda designers have changed is the logo on the steering wheel.
To recap, the BT-50 will share the same 3.0-litre diesel engine that dispenses 190 PS and 450 Nm as the Isuzu D-Max. We suspect that a fuel-saving 1.9-litre Ddi BluePower engine that dispenses 150 PS and 350 Nm version will follow when the BT-50 goes on sale later this year.
The 2020 Isuzu D-Max has also been given 5-stars at the ASEAN NCAP awards. So, perhaps Mazda will mirror the safety rating by giving the BT-50 the same ADAS systems as the D-Max as well.
There isn’t a time in memory that doesn’t involve staring at cars. After discovering the excitement of watching Schumacher vs Hakkinen, Formula 1 became a major part of life. The love for cars and F1 ultimately led to a job with CAR Magazine. The untimely death of the magazine meant a hiatus from cars at lifestyle women’s magazine Marie Claire before another opportunity came knocking again.
