Mazda claims that their Mazda CX-5 2.5L Turbo AWD has a rated fuel consumption of 8.2 L/100 km but how realistic is it in the real world? We put the Mazda CX-5 2.5L Turbo AWD through our WapCar fuel consumption test and here are our results.
The CX-5 2.5 Turbo AWD is powered by a 2.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder SkyActiv-G petrol engine paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive.
The engine packs 230 PS and 420 Nm of torque which makes it the most powerful petrol-powered SUV in the segment. It has a kerb weight of 1,758 kg – which is heavier than even the Proton X70.
Before we begin our test, the tyre pressure was inflated to the manufacturers recommended specs of 250 kPa (cold tyres) for all four tyres. The CX-5 2.5 Turbo AWD rides on 19-inch wheels wrapped in Toyo Proxes R46 225/55 R19 profile tyres.
The CX-5’s 58-litre fuel tank is filled up to the brim using the ‘three-click’ method – have the fuel nozzle jump three times with 10 seconds between each jump.
Driving behaviour was more gentle than usual as the car was still in its running-in period. We still accelerate and brake whenever necessary, but the speed limit was capped at 110 km/h. Air conditioning was set at 22 degrees and fan speed 2. The car was in Normal Mode and only the driver is in the car throughout the test.
At the end of the test, we’ve covered 146.2 km with a journey breakdown of 30% highway 60% city driving. The trip computer displayed an average fuel economy of 9.7 litres per 100 km (10.3 km/L).
We made our final stop at the same petrol station and refuelled using the same ‘three-click’ method. The fuel tank required 15.2 litres of fuel which works out to fuel consumption of 10.4 litres per 100 km as tested.
The CX-5 2.5 Turbo has a 58-litre capacity fuel tank which means based on our fuel consumption test result, it has a theoretical range of 558 km per full tank.
All in all, the CX-5 2.5 Turbo has all the recipe for bad fuel consumption - heavyweight, large capacity turbo engine and all-wheel drive. But don't forget that it packs 230 PS so fuel economy is not its strongest suit, performance is. Expect the fuel consumption to improve after the engine is properly run in.
