0-100 km/h: Myvi, Iriz, Jazz, Yaris, Mazda 2 and Polo, which is fastest?

The B-segment hatchback is a pretty popular segment in Malaysia, being the first choice among fresh grads and those looking for an upgrade from a small city car like the Perodua Axia or an older car. It’s also the segment where Malaysia’s most popular car resides in, the Perodua Myvi.

The Myvi has always been an icon in the hearts of Malaysians. We’ve seen memes or even witness first-hand how the infamous Malaysian supercar charges up and down Malaysian roads without missing a beat.

Which got us thinking here at WapCar, is it really the fastest B-segment hatchback on sale in Malaysia?

We collected some data from our tests and reviews and compared them side by side. We pitted together the 6 B-segment hatchbacks that are on sale today which are the Perodua Myvi 1.5 H Line, Proton Iriz 1.6 Premium, Honda Jazz 1.5 V, Mazda 2 1.5 Hatchback, Toyota Yaris 1.5 G, and Volkswagen Polo 1.6 MPI Comfortline.

We recorded the times of the 0-100 km/h test of all but the Myvi and the Polo in our ratings and reviews. So, the times recorded for both the Myvi and Polo are taken from the manufacturers.

Without further ado, here are the times taken for all 6 cars.

Just like in our overall ratings result between the Japanese trio, the Mazda 2 takes the fastest time with a time of 10.5 seconds. This is followed by the Polo and the Myvi.

The Polo might be an ageing car – Malaysia is still selling the MK V Polo while the rest of the world has moved on with the MK VI, but its performance is still alright given its age. It places second fastest among the 6, according to manufacturer's figures.

The Malaysian supercar isn’t the fastest here but it edges out ahead of the Proton Iriz by only 0.1 seconds. That’s a pretty close fight between our local boys.

One of the reasons why the Iriz scored such a low number might be due to its weight – it is 163 kg heavier than the Myvi. That is on paper. In the real world, the Iriz could beat the Myvi easily in a drag race as seen here.

On the other hand, the Mazda 2 is a driver-focused car and while it doesn’t have the highest power output among the 6, according to our review on the Mazda 2, the direct injection definitely gives the acceleration an extra bite.

Bottoming out the list is the Honda Jazz and Toyota Yaris with the Yaris being the slowest at 12.5 seconds. Still, the Yaris is hands down the most comfortable to ride in and the Jazz the most practical to live with. Performance definitely doesn’t matter for these two.

There you have it, those are the 0-100 km/h times of the B-segment hatchbacks on the road today. The Mazda 2 is the fastest but as we had reviewed it’s also the least comfortable and least practical. It’s the opposite for the Toyota Yaris in those regards.

As for the Myvi, it may not be the fastest here not even by a long shot but it still remains a supercar, in our hearts.
